HOUGHTON, Mich. - Freshman Joe Colborne tallied three points to
lead Denver to a 6-1 win over the Michigan Tech hockey team tonight
(Dec. 6). The Pioneers (11-5-1, 7-4-1) finished 1-6 on the power
play and Tech (2-13-1, 1-10-1) was 0-6.
"We worked hard but again we made mistakes fundamentally," said
head coach Jamie Russell.
Colborne recorded his first point of the evening with a goal that
beat freshman Josh Robinson high on the stick side. Sophomore
Marc Cheverie assisted on the first shorthanded goal of Colborne's
career at 8:32 of the first period.
Colborne picked up his second point of the weekend with an assist
on junior Tyler Ruegsegger's goal at 13:48. Sophomore Kyle Ostrow
also assisted on the goal.
Denver scored its third goal of the opening period thanks to
another assist by Colborne. Freshman Patrick Wiercioch scored the
seventh goal of his career with a shot that snuck in under the
crossbar at 16:48.
Freshman Corson Cramer, who played the third period the
night before, started the second period in net for the Huskies.
Sophomore Jesse Martin extended the Pioneer lead to 4-0 with his
even strength goal 18 seconds into the period. The goal was his
third of the season.
Sophomore Deron Cousens busted up the Denver shut out with
a long shot from the blue line at 2:32. He was unassisted on his
second goal of the season.
DU added two more goals in the third period. Junior Matt Glasser
scored his first goal of the season at 2:23 of the third and
freshman Luke Salazar scored his tenth goal of the season with less
than two minutes remaining.
Robinson (1-4-0) made five saves and gave up three goals in one
period of work for the Huskies. Cramer made 10 saves on 13 shots in
two periods of work.
Denver also had two goalies in net. Cheverie (11-5-1) made 19 saves
on 20 shots in 54 minutes of work. Sophomore Lars Paulgaard made
two saves on two shots in six minutes of action.
Michigan Tech will travel to Minnesota Duluth for a pair of WCHA
games next weekend (Dec. 12-13).
