HOUGHTON, Mich. - Five different players recorded two or more
points on the evening for Denver in a 6-0 win over the Michigan
Tech hockey team Friday (Dec. 5). Sophomore Anthony Maiani led the
offensive attack for the Pioneers with a goal and two assists.
Denver (9-5-1, 5-4-1) finished the evening 2-7 on the power play
and Tech (2-12-1, 1-9-1) was 0-6.
"We need to find a way to execute," said head coach Jamie
Russell. "Guys need to believe in themselves and believe in
what we want to do."
Maiani put the Pioneers up early with his seventh goal of the
season at 1:45 of the first period. Brandon Vossberg was the lone
assist on the goal.
The Huskies appeared to have tied the game up at 1-1 when they lit
the lamp after a scramble in front of the goal with roughly three
minutes remaining if the period. After a video review the goal was
disallowed because the officials lost track of the puck.
Tech nearly tied the game once again four minutes into the second
frame when Bennett Royer rang a shot of the pipe.
Tyler Ruegsegger scored the first of four DU goals in the second at
12:21. He was assisted on the power play goal by Joe Colborne and
Tyler Bozak.
Less than one minute later Patrick Mullen scored the third short
handed goal of the season for the Pioneers. Rhett Rakhshani and
Bozak recorded an assist on the goal.
DU closed out the period with an even strength goal by Brandon
Vossberg and a power play goal by Luke Salazar.
Freshman Corson Cramer got his first action of the season
after he took over for Rob Nolan in the third period.
Jesse Martin scored the final goal for Denver less than one minute
into the final frame.
Marc Cheverie (10-5-1) picked up the win after recording 25 saves
in his second career shutout.
Nolan (1-9-1) made 12 saves and gave up five goals in 40 minutes of
work. Cramer made 10 saves on 11 shots in the final frame of
work.
The Huskies and Pioneers will wrap up the series tomorrow (Dec. 6)
at 7:07 p.m.
