DETROIT - Sophomore forward Jordan
Baker scored the game-winning goal at 14:02 of the third period
to lift Michigan Tech to a 2-1 victory over No. 18 North Dakota in
the third place game of the 44th Annual Great Lakes Invitational
Tournament today. Baker leads the team with nine goals this season.
He was assisted on the goal by freshman Brett
Olson and senior Alex Lord.
"We came to the rink with much more focus," said head coach Jamie
Russell. "Our penalty kill was outstanding tonight, and Ryan
Angelow did a great job in the third period with faceoffs."
Angelow opened the game's scoring with his first goal of the season
at 17:18 of the middle period. He beat North Dakota goaltender Brad
Eidness high over the blocker with a quick wrist shot from the
right circle. Junior Ryan Bunger tallied his first assist of the
season on the goal.
Evan Trupp evened the game at 1-1 with his second goal of the
season at 8:14 of the third period. He was assisted by Brett
Hextall and Chris VandeVelde.
The game winner came as Baker punched home a rebound off Brett
Olson's initial shot from the right half wall.
Tech goalie Rob Nolan (2-10-1) made 29 saves on 30 shots to
help the Huskies move to 3-1-1 in their last five games.
On the other end, Eidsness made 18 saves on 20 shots.
Neither team was able to capitalize on the power play with the
Huskies finishing 0-for-3 and the Fighting Sioux 0-for-6.
Tech has defeated North Dakota two of the last three times they
have met.
Michigan Tech will enjoy its first off weekend of the season before
returning to WCHA play at Denver Jan. 9-10.
