HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Michigan Tech Huskies celebrated Senior
Night with a 3-0 drubbing of the Ferris State Bulldogs on Saturday
(Nov. 8). With the win, the Huskies improve their record to 19-9
overall and 12-4 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference. The Bulldogs fell to 16-12 overall and 8-8 in the GLIAC
with the loss. With the victory Tech will host the Saginaw Valley
State Cardinals in a conference quarterfinal game.
"We came out emotional because of Senior Day, and that got us off
to bit of a slow start," said head coach Krista
Mikesch. "Ferris came out well and forced us to execute our
game plan, and we got the sweep this weekend."
The Bulldogs kept it close in the first set before the Huskies
prevailed 25-21. In set two, the hosts utilized a 7-3 run near the
end to earn a 25-16 victory. Another run, this time 10-5, late in
the third set helped the hosts earn the sweep of the match.
Tech out gained the Bulldogs in every major statistical category,
including a .265 attacking percentage compared to the .074 that
Ferris put up.
"We can enjoy the two wins, especially because this time of year
when you do that in back-to-back nights good things tend to
happen," said Mikesch. "We get another shot at Saginaw, and we're
on our home court with the crowd and the atmosphere and that's the
biggest benefit right now for us."
In her last regular season match in a Michigan Tech uniform, senior
Kelsey Skoog tallied more assists than the entire
Ferris State squad, 35-24. Skoog also added five kills, one service
ace, and two block assists.
Senior Jen Jung was one of the many leaders of a
balanced Huskies attack. The 6-1 middle hitter from Andover, Minn.,
garnered seven kills, a service ace, a trio of blocks and a pair of
block assists on the evening. Fellow senior, Christa
Jung helped the Black and Gold out by chipping in eight kills,
three assists and seven digs.
Kelly Jorgensen, a 6-2 middle hitter from Eden
Prairie, Minn., led the squad in attack percentage on the night
with a .455. She recorded five kills and one assist as well.
Junior Veronica Armstrong was the most well rounded Tech
player on the evening, getting a match high 13 kills to go along
with an assist, a service ace, and 10 digs.
Junior Kaari Nevanen had a good game, earning three of
the seven service aces on the night. The Duluth, Minn. native also
tallied two kills and a match high 17 digs.
Ferris was led by junior Kristy Gilchrist who was credited for
eight kills, a trio of assists, and four digs on the evening.
The Black and Gold will return to action on Wednesday, (Nov. 12) in
a GLIAC Quarterfinal matchup against the Saginaw Valley State
Cardinals. The Cardinals won a statistical tiebreaker between the
Northern Michigan Wildcats to punch their tickets for Houghton.
Michigan Tech and Saginaw Valley split the regular season series
1-1, with each team earning a win on their home court.
