MADISON, Wis. - The Michigan Tech hockey team out shot Wisconsin
34-25 but the Badgers finished the day 5-7 on the power play to
skate away with a 6-0 win Saturday (Nov. 8) at the Kohl Center. The
Badgers improve to (3-6-1, 3-4-1) and the Huskies fall to (2-6-0,
1-5-0).
"I thought we deserved a lot better tonight," said head coach Jamie
Russell. "We hit goal posts and had some bad bounces."
Sophomore defenseman Brendan Smith led Wisconsin with four assists
on the night and junior Blake Geoffrion added two goals and one
assist.
Wisconsin used good puck movement to score its first goal of the
game on the power play. Blake Geoffrion scored his fourth goal of
the season at 14:31 of the first period off passes from Brendan
Smith and Jamie McBain.
The Badgers extended their lead to two thanks to a power play goal
by John Mitchell at 11:44 of the second period. Mitchell tallied
his fourth goal of the season after he tapped in a loose puck in
the crease past freshman goalie Josh
Robinson. Cody Goloubef and Ryan McDonagh assisted on the
goal.
Wisconsin then scored four goals, including three on the power
play, in the final period.
McBain scored the third goal of the evening on a hard shot from the
blue line at 3:03.
The Badgers got a little lucky on their fourth goal of the evening
when a pass by senior forward Tom Gorowsky hit Tech junior forward
John Kivisto in the skate and went in the
net.
The final two goals for Wisconsin came on a long shot by McDonagh
at 7:13 and a one-timer by Geoffrion at 14:14. Robinson was
screened on the goal by McDonagh.
The Huskies weren't without some chances of their own. Tech
appeared to have scored four minutes into the second period but it
was disallowed because the referee intended to blow his whistle
earlier.
Tech also had a second goal roughly four minutes into the third
disallowed. Neither goal was reviewed.
Scott Gudmanson (1-2-0) made 34 saves in the Badger shut out.
Robinson (1-1-0) made 19 saves on 25 shots for the Huskies.
Tech will travel to Minnesota next weekend (Nov. 15-16) in a rare
Saturday-Sunday series.
