MOORHEAD, Minn. Michigan Tech suffered its first women's
basketball loss of the season at the hands of Minnesota State
Moorhead 70-66 today. The Huskies battled back from a 13-point
deficit to 69-66 with the ball and 12 seconds to play but couldn't
get the equalizer.
MSUM used 53 percent field goal shooting and a 41-28 edge in
rebounds to improve to 3-0 on the season.
"We didn't stick to our game plan, especially on the defensive
end," said head coach John Barnes. "They played really well and
made open shots while missed the shots we needed to make. We also
needed to do a better job at the free throw line."
Neither team led by more than five points in the opening frame. Katie
Wysocky scored the Huskies' first eight points of the game en
route to 10 points by halftime. A Lisa
Staehlin layup knotted the game at 25 before the Dragons went
into halftime with a 30-27 edge.
The Dragons pushed their lead to as many as 12 before Katie
Zimmerman 3-pointer made it a six point game with 7:52 to play.
She was also fouled on the attempt, but could not make the ensuing
free throw which ended her streak of 39 consecutive made foul
shots.
An 8-1 run helped Moorhead again expand the margin this time
to a game-high 13 with 5:39 to go. It was still an 11-point game at
the three-minute mark before Tech began its comeback bid. Good
3-pointers by Zimmerman and Sarah
Stream and a layup from Wysocky got the Huskies within 69-66
with the ball and 12 ticks left. After a timeout, Sarah
Stream misfired on a triple and the Dragons grabbed the rebound
to seal the game.
Stream finished with a game-high 22 points to go with five assists.
Wysocky added 15 points and Lindsey
Lindstrom also tallied double figures with 10 points.
Tech committed just seven turnovers in the game, but shot 41
percent from the field and 8-of-13 (61 percent) at the foul
line.
Michigan Tech (2-1) will be off until it opens its conference slate
Dec. 4 at Wayne State.
Notes: Tech's second-ever game vs. MSU Moorhead was decided by the
same margin. Last year, the Huskies defeated the Dragons 47-44 in
Houghton on Zimmerman's 3-pointer.
