TECH GAINS 32-28 COME-FROM-BEHIND WIN VS. TIFFIN

HOUGHTON, Mich. — The Michigan Tech football team scored 15 points in the final 5:35 to overcome an 11-point deficit and defeat Tiffin, 32-28, today at Sherman Field. Quarterback Steve Short found freshman Stephen Worthy open in the endzone with 29 seconds remaining for the go-ahead score to lift the Huskies to 7-3 overall and 6-3 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Tech also improved to 5-1 in games decided by a touchdown or less in 2008.

"I'm not going to pinch myself yet," said head coach Tom Kearly, whose team finished the regular season with a 5-1 home record. "Tiffin played a great ballgame, but our kids continue to make the right plays at the right times. It was a true team effort today."

Tiffin (1-9 overall, 1-8 GLIAC) drained 7:38 off the clock on a 16-play drive that made the score 28-17 with 6:24 to go. The Huskies answered immediately by going 63 yards on four plays in just 43 seconds. Bobby Slowik hauled in a Short pass and dodged defenders for a 47-yard gain to the TU 16 during the drive. Phil Milbrath capped the quick strike with a two-yard run.

The Dragons then pushed the ball into Tech territory before attempting their first punt of the day. The snap was low and the fumble resulted in the Huskies gaining possession at their own 45.

Short then went to work with 2:20 showing on the clock. He rushed and passed for first downs into the Tiffin redzone. After a nine-yard rush by Short and two incompletions, it was fourth-and-one at the Dragon 13 with 29 seconds left. Short rushed to the right from the shotgun and picked up the first down by the nose of the ball.

The next play saw Short scramble to his left and float a pass to Worthy, who jumped into the air and brought the ball down with his toes inches from the sideline. The touchdown game the Huskies their first lead of the game with 29 seconds left.

Defensive back Chet White sealed the Tech win with an interception of Tiffin quarterback Matt Root at the Huskies' 41.

Tiffin held a 487-410 lead in total offensive yards. Root completed 36-of-47 passes for 314 yards.

Tech was led by Short's 305 yards of total offense including 237 passing and 68 rushing. Milbrath carried the ball 24 times for 99 yards and two scores. Slowik was the team leader in receiving with seven catches for 120 yards.

The Dragons scored the first 16 points of the game and led 16-7 at the half after Milbrath scored with 27 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

The Black and Gold scored on their opening drive of the third quarter as Keith White hauled in a 25-yard pass from Short. The reception gave White the school record for career receiving yards. The 6-4 senior finished the game with 91 yards to push his career total to 2,288.

David Carmody paced the Tech defense with 11 tackles and a second-quarter interception. White had five tackles to go with his fourth-quarter pick.

Michigan Tech's playoff hopes remain alive. The Huskies will travel to Northwood next Saturday (Nov. 8) for their final regular season contest.
