HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Alaska Anchorage hockey team came into the
game leading the WCHA on the power play but it was Michigan Tech
who scored two power play goals and scored another seconds after
another power play expired to give the Huskies a 4-2 win in their
regular season home opener Friday (Oct. 31).
"Our power play was able to click tonight," said head coach Jamie
Russell.
The Huskies scored their first goal of the game one second after
the first Seawolves penalty expired. Senior defenseman Geoff
Kinrade took a shot that was blocked by Anchorage goalie Jon
Olthuis. Freshman forward Brett
Olson passed the loose puck across the face of the net to
senior Alex Gagne for his first goal of the season at
3:59 of the first period.
Junior John Kivisto also tallied his first goal of the
season on the power play at 11:05 of the first frame. Sophomore Eric
Kattelus and junior Drew Dobson assisted on the goal. Dobson
currently leads the team with five assists.
Tommy Grant tied the game at 2-2 with a pair of goals in the second
period. He scored a power play goal less than one minute into the
second and added an even strength goal at 4:00.
The Huskies weathered a strong offensive attack just past the
midway point of the second period.
"We had a big kill on the five-on-three," said head coach Jamie
Russell.
The Huskies took advantage of the man advantage once again when
sophomore defenseman Deron Cousens scored the game-winner at
1:05 of the third period. Olson and Kinrade assisted on the
goal.
With the Anchorage goalie pulled, senior Malcolm
Gwilliam scored an empty net goal after sending an earlier shot
off the pipe. He was assisted on the goal at 19:49 by Gagne and
sophomore Jordan Baker.
Senior Rob Nolan (1-3-0) made 25 saves on 27 shots in
the Tech victory and Jon Olthuis made 22 saves on 26 shots for the
Seawolves.
The two teams will wrap-up the series Saturday (Nov. 1). Game time
is set for 7:37 p.m.
