HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Michigan Tech volleyball team dropped the
first two sets (21-25, 24-26) but rallied to win the next three
(29-27, 25-16, 15-12) to defeat Ashland, 3-2, at home in Great
Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action Thursday (Oct. 2).
With the win the Huskies remain in second place in the North
Division with an 11-5 overall and 6-2 conference record. The Eagles
fall to 8-7 overall and 4-4 in the league.
"Our experience helped tonight. Ashland is a young team and their
errors cost them down the stretch," said head coach Krista
Mikesch. "The first two sets we didn't earn a lot of points. We
committed a lot of unforced errors."
Junior Kelly Jorgensen paced the Huskies with 17 kills
on route to hitting .417 in the match. She also recorded one block
solo and four block assists.
Senior Jen Jung also turned in a solid performance
hitting .333 with 17 kills and adding two block solos and three
block assists.
Senior Christa Jung struggled offensively but stepped up
defensively to lead the team with one block solo and six block
assists.
Senior setter Kelsey Skoog tallied 48 assists in the five set
thriller, the most for the Long Lake, Minn., native this season
since she recorded 58 in a 3-1 win over Northwest Missouri State on
Aug. 29.
Sophomore Kaitlin Wiza finished with a match-high 24 digs
to lead a quartet of Tech players with 10 or more digs. Overall the
Huskies finished with 81 digs in the match.
Junior Marina Santos led the Eagles in both kills (18) and digs
(18) in the match.
The Huskies will host GLIAC newcomer Tiffin Friday (Oct. 3) at 7:00
p.m.
