FINDLAY, Ohio Michigan Tech scored the go-ahead touchdown
with 7:32 remaining then held on with David
Carmody's interception at the 1:15 mark to defeat Findlay,
30-28, today at Donnell Stadium. The Huskies, who are ranked fourth
in the region, improved to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with the win.
Phil Milbrath accounted for 217 of the team's 372
yards by rushing for 173 yards and catching four passes for 44
more.
Tech trailed, 28-24, in the fourth quarter until Steve
Short guided the offense on a 14-play, 65-yard drive. A 12-yard
catch by Keith White set up the Huskies with
first-and-goal at the two. After being stopped on three straight
downs, Short hooked up with White on a slant pass on fourth down
from four yards out to put the Black and Gold on top.
Findlay was driving deep into Tech territory under two minutes when
Sean Spellman hit Oiler quarterback Anthony
Lanzara as he threw. The ball fluttered and was picked off by
Carmody. The Huskies were able to kneel out the win.
"This was a big win on the road," said head coach Tom
Kearly. "Our offense moved the ball all day and answered their
scores. and the defense came up with the big stop when it needed
it."
The game was a see-saw affair throughout. UF scored the game's
first touchdown midway through the first quarter. Milbrath answered
on the next play from scrimmage, going 71 yards to paydirt.
Backup tailback Akeem Cason scored his first career TD on Tech's
next possession for a 14-7 lead.
Findlay tied it up later in the second quarter, but Tyler
Cattelino split the uprights on a 37-yard field goal for a
17-14 margin at halftime.
The teams traded scores in the third quarter as UF's Jonathan Bell
and Milbrath both tallied their second touchdowns on the day. The
hosts then grabbed a 28-24 advantage by throwing a 36-yard TD pass
on a trick reverse play.
UF held a 386-372 advantage in total offense. The Huskies' defense
didn't get much pressure on Lanzara until Spellman forced the
interception the game's only turnover.
Kirk Kunnen paced Tech in tackles with nine.
Carmody had eight to go with his interception.
Short completed 16-of-24 passes for 143 yads and a touchdown. White
hauled in seven passes for 55 yards and the go-ahead score.
Michigan Tech will return home next Saturday (Oct. 18) for a GLIAC
contest vs. Indianapolis. Kickoff at Sherman Field is slated for 1
p.m.
