ERIE, Pa. - Michigan Tech had three different players score as
it defeated Mercyhurst 3-2 in a non-conference match-up tonight.
The Huskies (8-9-2) out shot Mercyhurst (5-12-2) 38-22 in the
contest.
"We did a good job tonight to grind out a 3-2 win," said head coach
Jamie Russell.
The Huskies employed a large amount of pressure to start the game
but it wasn't until 16:09 that the Huskies scored their first goal
of the game. Senior Peter Rouleau drew the defense to the middle
before he found teammate Tyler Shelast alone on the post. Shelast
connected on his second attempt as he scored his tenth goal of the
season. He was assisted by Rouleau on the even strength goal.
Mercyhurst wasted no time as they tied the game at 1-1 with a goal
of its own less than one minute later. Senior Rob Nolan pushed a
shot wide before freshman Brandon Coccimiglio collected the loose
puck and picked up an assist on a goal by senior Ben Cottreau.
Michigan Tech opened the second period with a trio of power plays.
The Huskies finally capitalized on the third man advantage as
Rouleau scored his first goal of the game at 7:21. Junior Geoff
Kinrade found Rouleau on the post for the tap in to give Tech a 2-1
advantage. Senior Jimmy Kerr also notched an assist on the
goal.
The lead did not last for long as the Lakers tied the game with a
power play goal of its own. Sophomore Cody Collins blasted a shot
from the blue line that got by Tech goalie Rob Nolan who was
screened on the play. He was assisted on the goal by freshman Steve
Cameron and sophomore Matt Fennell. The power play goal was the
first the Huskies had given up since its 3-2 overtime win at
Minnesota on Nov. 30th.
Freshman Deron Cousens picked up just the second assist of his
career as he sent a shot from the blueline that was redirected by
junior Alex Gagne at 13:45 of the second period for the
game-winner. Fellow freshman Bennett Royer also tallied an assist
on the Gagne goal.
Neither team could find the net in the third period that featured
nine penalties for 18 minutes. The Huskies were forced to kill-off
three third period power plays, including a 6-on-4 advantage to end
the game.
Each team scored a goal on the power play in the game as Tech
finished 1-7 and Mercyhurst was 1-5.
"Our first power play unit did a very good job tonight. They spread
it out and got some chances," said Russell.
Nolan (4-5-0) turned in another stellar performance for the Huskies
as he made 20 saves and allowed two goals in his fourth win of the
season.
Junior Matt Lundin (4-5-1) also fared well in net for the Lakers as
he made 35 saves and allowed three goals.
The two teams will wrap-up the doubleheader Saturday at 7:05
