Michigan Tech Gains Seventh Straight GLIAC Win
DETROIT - Michigan Tech took a 14-0 lead in the second quarter
and never relinquished the lead in a 21-14 victory at Wayne State
today. The win, which was the seventh straight league win for the
Huskies (1-1, 1-0 GLIAC), wasn't without drama.
The Warriors (0-1, 0-1 GLIAC) recovered an on-side kick with 2:06
to play trailing by just a touchdown. Michigan Tech forced three
incomplete passes before senior nose guard Lee Keys recorded a sack
on fourth down to seal the Huskies' win.
The Black and Gold led, 14-7, at the half after several key plays
went in their favor. David Carmody tripped up WSU's Joique Bell at
the eight-yard line to save a touchdown in the first quarter. Two
plays later, Chris Nowak intercepted a tipped ball in the endzone
to give the Huskies a first-and-10 at their 20.
On the ensuing drive, Phil Milbrath scored his first career
touchdown - a three-yard run - to cap the 80-yard drive. After a
defensive stop, Michigan Tech marched downfield again and scored on
Billy Koenig's one-yard walk-in.
Former Husky Daryl Graham scampered 38 yards with 5:44 left in the
second quarter to draw the Warriors back within a touchdown, 14-7.
Both teams had opportunities in the final two minutes of the
opening half. A pass interference penalty with no time left against
the Huskies gave WSU an untimed down and a 41-yard field goal
attempt, which David Chudzinski missed wide left.
With 1:41 left in the third quarter, Michigan Tech made the score
21-7 with Milbrath's second TD of the day - a nine-yard run around
the right end. The rookie added plenty more yardage in the fourth
quarter to go over 100 yards in his first career start.
Wayne State went 95 yards for a touchdown with 2:07 left in the
fourth quarter before the on-side kick and Tech's big defensive
stop.
Milbrath finished with 118 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries.
Quarterback Steve Short added 67 yards on the ground - picking up
key third downs to keep the clock moving in the fourth quarter.
Kirk Williams was the Huskies' top receiver with six catches for 82
yards.
Bell (162 yards) and Graham (97) combined for 259 yards rushing,
but the Huskies' defense gave up very few big plays.
Tech strong safety Cheyne Nelson tallied 10 tackles, a sack, and a
forced fumble to lead the visitor's defensive effort. Linebacker
John Vanderlaan added eight tackles in a sack for the Huskies.
Michigan Tech will play its home opener next Saturday (Sept. 8)
against Indianapolis. Kickoff at Sherman Field is scheduled for 1
p.m.
