SHORT BREAKS THREE SCHOOL RECORDS IN 47-44 OVERTIME LOSS AT WINONA

Sophomore Passes for 431 Yards and Six Touchdowns

WINONA, Minn. -- Sophomore quarterback Steve Short set school records for passing yards (431), total offense (504), and touchdowns (six) but Michigan Tech fell in overtime at Winona State, 47-44. Special teams was the story of the game -- especially in overtime as the Warriors made a 37-yard field goal and the Huskies' missed their 37-yarder.

Michigan Tech overcame a 23-12 halftime deficit by scoring 32 points in the second half. The lone points for either team in the third quarter came off a two-yard pass from Short to tight end Ben James. Short ran in the two-point conversion to make the score 23-20.

The fourth quarter featured a total of 45 points between the teams. Keith White's third touchdown of the day with 54 seconds left put the Huskies on top, 42-37. Short again ran in a two-point conversion to make it a seven-point game.

With the use of three timeouts and a hook-and-ladder play, Winona was able to tie the game with 13 seconds remaining.

In overtime, Tech ran three plays before true freshman Tyler Cattelino missed a 37-yard attempt just wide left. Michigan Tech's defense stopped WSU on their offensive chance, forcing a 37-yard field goal, which Ryan Abbott put through the uprights.

Short completed 27-of-45 passes for 431 yards and six scores. He also ran 12 times for 73 yards. Marvin Atkins gained 44 yards on 19 carries in his first collegiate start. White had eight grabs for 189 yards, while James made six catches for 76 yards.

Michigan Tech outgained the Warriors, 576-462 in total offense. Special teams provided the Warriors a big lift. WSU returned a second-quarter kickoff for a touchdown. They also converted two-of-three field goals and five-of-five extra points. Michigan Tech was 0-for-3 on field goal attempts and two-of-four on extra points.

Cheyne Nelson and Sean Spellman led the Huskies' defensive effort with 10 tackles apiece.

Michigan Tech heads to Wayne State for its next contest Saturday (Sept. 1) at 12 noon.
