Sophomore Passes for 431 Yards and Six Touchdowns
WINONA, Minn. -- Sophomore quarterback Steve Short set school
records for passing yards (431), total offense (504), and
touchdowns (six) but Michigan Tech fell in overtime at Winona
State, 47-44. Special teams was the story of the game -- especially
in overtime as the Warriors made a 37-yard field goal and the
Huskies' missed their 37-yarder.
Michigan Tech overcame a 23-12 halftime deficit by scoring 32
points in the second half. The lone points for either team in the
third quarter came off a two-yard pass from Short to tight end Ben
James. Short ran in the two-point conversion to make the score
23-20.
The fourth quarter featured a total of 45 points between the teams.
Keith White's third touchdown of the day with 54 seconds left put
the Huskies on top, 42-37. Short again ran in a two-point
conversion to make it a seven-point game.
With the use of three timeouts and a hook-and-ladder play, Winona
was able to tie the game with 13 seconds remaining.
In overtime, Tech ran three plays before true freshman Tyler
Cattelino missed a 37-yard attempt just wide left. Michigan Tech's
defense stopped WSU on their offensive chance, forcing a 37-yard
field goal, which Ryan Abbott put through the uprights.
Short completed 27-of-45 passes for 431 yards and six scores. He
also ran 12 times for 73 yards. Marvin Atkins gained 44 yards on 19
carries in his first collegiate start. White had eight grabs for
189 yards, while James made six catches for 76 yards.
Michigan Tech outgained the Warriors, 576-462 in total offense.
Special teams provided the Warriors a big lift. WSU returned a
second-quarter kickoff for a touchdown. They also converted
two-of-three field goals and five-of-five extra points. Michigan
Tech was 0-for-3 on field goal attempts and two-of-four on extra
points.
Cheyne Nelson and Sean Spellman led the Huskies' defensive effort
with 10 tackles apiece.
Michigan Tech heads to Wayne State for its next contest Saturday
(Sept. 1) at 12 noon.
