Teslak Grabs Third Blanking of Year After Making 31
Saves
HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Michigan Tech extended its home unbeaten
streak to seven games and picked up its fourth shutout of the
season by defeating the 19th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers, 2-0, in
front of 3,378 Friday night at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
Michael-Lee Teslak (Fernie, B.C.) stopped all 31 shots he faced to
record his third shutout of the year and Ryan Bunger (Sammamish,
Wash.) and Justin St. Louis (Calgary, Alta.) each lit the lamp to
keep the Huskies quest for a Western Collegiate Hockey Association
home playoff berth alive.
The Huskies drew first blood on their third power play near the end
of a hard-fought first period, when freshman Bunger tallied his
fourth goal of the season at the 16:26 mark. Fellow rookie Eli
Vlaisavljevich (Shoreview, Minn.), who had been robbed by Wisconsin
goaltender Brian Elliott when he fired a blistering one-timer on
the previous power play, set up the goal by firing a low slap shot
from the blue line after receiving a pass from senior co-captain
Mike Batovanja (Hinton, Alta.). Bunger tipped the shot past a
screened Elliott, and the home team went into the locker room with
a 1-0 advantage.
Heavy hitting remained the theme throughout the second period, as
the teams were flagged for nine penalties. MTU was called for five
infractions during the middle frame resulting in extended
short-handed situations. However, Teslak remained perfect in goal
after making several big stops.
Wisconsin was called for an assortment of penalties to start the
third frame, which led to brief, back-to-back 5-on-3 power play
opportunities for the Huskies. After coming up empty on those
chances, Tech scored its second goal at 8:16. On an odd-man
offensive rush, Malcolm Gwilliam (Kamloops, B.C.) fired a hard shot
from the right wing that bounced off the crossbar. St. Louis skated
into the slot and knocked home the rebound to Elliott's right for
his second goal of the year. John Schwarz (Calgary, Alta.) was
credited with the second assist, his fourth of the year, in the
sophomore's first game back since January 19 at Alaska
Anchorage.
The Badgers outshot the Huskies 15-5 in the final frame, but their
effort did not provide a dent on the scoreboard.
Elliott finished with 22 saves for UW.
Tech killed off all six Wisconsin power-play chances in the
contest, while MTU was 1-for-8 with a man advantage.
Michigan Tech evened up its record at 14-14-5, while improving to
9-11-5 in WCHA play. Wisconsin fell to 14-16-3 in all games and
11-12-2 WCHA in league competition.
The Huskies will wrap up the home portion of their regular season
with a rematch against the Badgers Saturday night. The opening
faceoff is set for 7:07.
Notes: Teslak's shutout was his third of the season, and the first
by Michigan Tech over Wisconsin since November 16, 2001, in Madison
... Tonight was the first time UW has been held scoreless in
Houghton since November 12, 1993 ... Teslak is tied with Gary
Bauman (1962-63 and 193-64) and Bob McManus (1955-56) for second
all-time among Tech goalies for shutouts in a season ... He needs
one more blanking to move into a tie for first all-time with Jim
Warden (1974-75), who amassed four shutouts ... The win pushed the
Huskies home record to 9-4-3 ... Tech is now 6-2-3 in its last 11
games ... The Huskies increased their WCHA point total to 23, which
marks their highest such total since the league lowered the number
of conference games from 32 to 28 prior to the 1997-98 season ...
MTU is 12-7-3 against teams ranked in the top 20 in the 2006-07
campaign ... Bunger's game-winning marker was his first as a
collegian ... After Saturday's game, Mike Batovanja, Lars Helminen
and Tyler Skworchinski will be honored in a Senior Night
ceremony.
