MADISON, Wis. - The Michigan Tech hockey team moved into sole
position atop the WCHA standings with a 4-2 road win over Wisconsin
Friday in front of a crowd of over 12,000. Senior Jimmy Kerr led
the Huskies (5-2-0, 4-1-0) with a pair of goals.
The Badgers (3-2-0, 0-1-0) controlled most of the opening 10
minutes. Kyle Klubertanz put the Badgers on the board first with an
even strength goal at 4:54 of the first.
"We weathered the storm early and our special teams played really
well tonight," said Michigan Tech head coach Jamie Russell.
The Huskies would not be knocked down however as they answered with
three straight goals.
Kerr tied the game as his wrist shot from the slot got past Badger
goalie Shane Connelly. Geoff Kinrade and Drew Dobson each picked up
helpers on the goal at 13:39 of the first period.
Kerr then gave Michigan Tech a 2-1 lead just before the end of the
first period on a delayed penalty. Dobson added his second assist
of the game while Tyler Shelast picked up his first.
Less than three minutes into the second period, Geoff Kinrade
collected the puck behind the net and skated the length of the ice
to score what would hold up as the game winner for the Huskies.
Goalie Michael-Lee Teslak picked up the lone assist on the power
play goal.
Davis Drewiske breathed some life into the Badger offense with his
goal at 11:34 of the second period.
Finding themselves one goal down late in the game, Wisconsin head
coach Mike Eaves pulled Connelly in favor of the extra attacker.
The Huskies capitalized as Shelast wrapped up the scoring with an
empty net goal at 18:46.
Michigan Tech finished the night 2-4 on the power play while
Wisconsin was 0-3.
Teslak picked up his third win of the season allowing two goals and
making 30 saves for Tech.
Connelly finished with 23 saves in the loss.
The Huskies will look to complete the sweep over the Badgers
Saturday. Game time is set for 7 p.m pm..
