DULUTH, Minn. - Michigan Tech recorded its first tie of the
season as it skated to a 1-1 tie on the road against Minnesota
Duluth Friday.
"I felt we played a real good game on the road tonight. We came
back from a goal down," said head coach Jamie Russell.
The Bulldogs, who were coming off its only power play of the first
period, caught the Huskies behind its own net as Michael Gergen fed
the puck to Josh Meyers coming down the middle. Meyers scored the
first goal of the night at 9:09 of the first period.
Michigan Tech goaltender Michael-Lee Teslak made a great save less
than a minute later to keep the Huskies within one.
The Huskies hard work paid off in the second period as they enjoyed
plenty of scoring opportunities. Alex Lord missed a golden
opportunity to tie the game but he couldn't settle the puck on a
rebound.
Freshman Jordan Baker also enjoyed a quality scoring opportunity as
he skated in alone on net but was stopped cold by Bulldog sophomore
goaltender Alex Stock.
Senior Tyler Shelast finally broke up the Bulldog shutout as he
scored a power play goal at 17:13 of the second period. The goal
was the 40th of his career and the 25th that he has scored on the
power play. He was assisted by seniors Peter Rouleau and Jimmy
Kerr.
Neither team could find the net in the third period as the game
went into overtime.
The Huskies kept constant pressure on the Bulldogs in the extra
frame. Michigan Tech took a time out with 35 seconds remaining in
the period.
"I wanted to keep the puck in the offensive zone for the face off
but for some reason it was moved out of the zone," said
Russell.
Teslak finished the night with 27 saves and one goal against for
the Huskies.
Stalock also finished the night with one goal against and 26
saves for the Bulldogs.
The two teams finished nearly identical on the score sheet. The
Bulldogs held a slight 28-27 advantage in shots. The Huskies
finished 1-3 on the power play while holding the Bulldogs 0-3.
The Huskies are 5-5-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the WCHA while Minnesota
Duluth will enter the rematch tomorrow with a record of 4-3-2
overall and 3-3-1 in the WCHA.
