HOUGHTON, Mich. Michigan Tech controlled both sides of
the ball in a 34-10 victory over Findlay in the season finale for
both teams at Sherman Field this afternoon. The Huskies finished
the season with a winning overall record of 6-5 and a Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference mark of 6-4 good for
fifth place.
Tech's senior-laden defense did a superb job on Senior Day, holding
the Oilers to just 34 yards rushing and 10 points. Meanwhile, the
offense racked up 218 yards rushing and 410 total yards en route to
the team's sixth game with 30 or more points this season.
"Our defense played very well today," said Huskies' head coach Tom
Kearly. "They didn't give up the big plays today, and they gave us
lots of chances on offense."
After a slow start for both teams on a muddy turf, Marvin Atkins
broke loose for a 41-yard gain. He fumbled, but Tech recovered at
the seven-yard line, setting up Phil Milbrath for a touchdown run
to the left side. The extra point by Tyler Cattelino missed,
leaving the score, 6-0, with 1:46 to play in the opening
quarter.
Michigan Tech scored again less than four minutes later as Milbrath
again found the endzone from seven yards out. His second touchdown
was originated when Kirk Williams completed a 52-yard pass to Bobby
Slowik on a double-pass play.
Later in the second quarter, Billy Koenig capped a 12-play drive
with the first of two, one-yard TD runs. The score was 20-0 after
30 minutes of play.
The Oilers broke up the shutout with a 31-yard field goal by
Cameron Stevens on their first drive of the second half. Tech
answered immediately as Koenig again found paydirt from one hash
out.
Michigan Tech's defense continued the intensity in the fourth
quarter with two interceptions. John Vanderlaan stepped in front of
a Jonathan Mora pass at the 12:43 mark and returned it 38 yards.
That set up a Cattelino field goal attempt, which he missed wide
left. Tech scored on UF's very next play, however. Michael
Rittenour picked off Mora at the 30-yard line and took it all 30
yards to the endzone to put the hosts on top, 34-3.
Mora scored at the 9:10 mark on an eight-yard quarterback keeper to
finish off the scoring.
Michigan Tech wrapped up its fourth consecutive season with a
winning record the first time the Huskies have accomplished
that since 1990-93 and first time as part of a conference since
1973-76.
"This win is big for us because it puts us in the top five in the
league for a fifth straight year," said Kearly. "I think Saginaw
Valley and Grand Valley are the only other teams in our conference
that can say that."
Short set the school record for passing yards in a season in the
third quarter as he moved past Alex Kowalski's total of 2,163. The
sophomore finished with 140 yards today and 2,194 on the campaign.
Keith White tallied three receptions 52 yards and had several near
misses on his 10th receiving touchdown of the season, which would
have been a new record.
Williams, in addition to his 52-yard pass, added five receptions
for 40 yards and two carries for 18 yards. He wound up in third
all-time in receptions at Michigan Tech with 136.
Atkins carried the ball 19 times for 138 yards, while Milbrath
totaled 50 more yards.
Will Clark registered seven tackles all solo in his
final game as a Husky. Fellow seniors Cheyne Nelson and Ryan Essex
notched six tackles apiece.
Tech's senior class finished their four-year careers with a records
of 27-14 overall, 27-12 in the GLIAC, and 16-4 at home.
