MICHIGAN TECH PICKS UP FIRST WIN OF THE YEAR OVER LAKE SUPERIOR STATE, 4-3

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Michigan Tech Huskies scored two power play goals to defeat Lake Superior State, 4-3. The Huskies improved to 1-1-0 on the young season while the Lakers remained winless on the season (0-1-1).

"I was really proud of our power play this weekend. We scored four goals, to wrap up play in the inaugural Superior Showcase and we couldn't have asked for more," said head coach Jamie Russell.

The Huskies scored their first power play goal of the game just six seconds into their first opportunity on the man advantage. After Peter Rouleau won the face off, Jimmy Kerr tapped the puck back to Drew Dobson who fired a shot on goal. Tyler Shelast, who scored two power play goals against Northern Michigan last Friday (Oct. 12), tapped in the rebound to put Michigan Tech up, 1-0.

"Tyler has had a great start to the season. He is a man on a mission," said Russell of the senior who has three power play goals on the year.

Ryan Angelow extended the Husky lead to 2-0 as he beat Lake Superior State goalie Pat Inglis high on the glove side. He was assisted by Ryan Bunger and Mark Malekoff on the goal at 7:58 of the first period.

With the first period winding down, Simon Gysbers threw the puck on net. It squeaked by Michigan Tech goalie Rob Nolan with just one second remaining.

The Lakers then took the lead, 3-2, in the second period as they scored back to back goals.

Senior Jordan Foote tied the game at 3-3 with his first goal of the season at 18:31 of the second period. He was assisted on the power play goal by junior Alex Gagne and fellow freshman Deron Cousens.

The Black and Gold reclaimed the lead at 3:39 of the third period as senior captain Jimmy Kerr buried the eventual game-winner from the slot. He was assisted by Eric Kattelus and Jordan Foote.

Dobson nearly scored his first goal of the season as his shot from center ice rang off the goal post at 6:20 of the third period.

The Lakers would not go away quietly. The Lakers went on the power play at 2:45 but were unable to convert. Lake Superior State pulled their goalie with 40 seconds remaining but fcouldn't solve Nolan

The Huskies netminder picked up his first win of the season for the Huskies as he made 14 saves.

Inglis made 21 saves in the Laker loss.

The Huskies will open WCHA play next Friday (Oct. 19) when they host Minnesota State at 7:07 p.m.
