Michigan Tech senior Tyler Shelast scored two power play goals
but it wasn't enough as the Huskies lost, 3-2, to Northern Michigan
Friday night at John MacInnes Student Ice Arena in the season
opener for both schools.
Special teams played a major role on the night as the two teams
combined for 16 penalties. Michigan Tech finished the night 2-8 on
the power play while Northern Michigan was 1-6. The Wildcats also
scored a short handed goal.
Nick Sirota put the Wildcats on the board first with his even
strength goal at 7:55 of the first period. He was assisted by
Andrew Sarauer and Andrew Fernandez.
Shelast followed up four minutes later with his first power play
goal of the night off an assist by Drew Dobson.
"Everyone kept telling me to shoot high glove side. That is where I
like to put it and it was open," said Shelast.
Jared Brown capitalized off a mistake by the Huskies as he picked
up a loose puck in the Huskie's defensive end and scored a short
handed goal for the Wildcats at 13:24 of the first period.
Northern Michigan had an opportunity to extend their lead to 4-2
four minutes into the second period as they a shot bounce off the
post.
Michigan Tech junior goaltender Michael-Lee Teslak made a great
save three minutes later to keep the Huskies within striking
distance. He would finish the game with 16 saves.
Shelast then added his second power play goal of the night as he
scored at 8:28 of the second period to tie the game at 2-2. Dobson
earned his second assist of the night on the goal. Geoff Kinrade
also assisted on the goal.
The Black and Gold narrowly escaped another great scoring
opportunity by the Wildcats late in the second period. Two Wildcats
were on a breakaway before they were called for off sides.
TJ Miller scored the game-winning goal for the Wildcats as his shot
from between the circles snuck by Teslak at 3:43 of the third
period. He was assisted on the goal by Nick Sirota and Matt
Butcher.
Brian Stewart picked up the win in goal for the Wildcats as he
finished the game with 20 saves.
Michigan Tech will wrap-up play in the Superior Showcase Sunday as
they host Lake Superior State at 5:37 p.m.
Notes - Legendary Michigan Tech hockey coach John MacInnes was
inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame ... attendance of 4,154
was 24th largest in school history.
