HUSKIES FALL TO WILDCATS IN SEASON OPENER

Michigan Tech senior Tyler Shelast scored two power play goals but it wasn't enough as the Huskies lost, 3-2, to Northern Michigan Friday night at John MacInnes Student Ice Arena in the season opener for both schools.

Special teams played a major role on the night as the two teams combined for 16 penalties. Michigan Tech finished the night 2-8 on the power play while Northern Michigan was 1-6. The Wildcats also scored a short handed goal.

Nick Sirota put the Wildcats on the board first with his even strength goal at 7:55 of the first period. He was assisted by Andrew Sarauer and Andrew Fernandez.

Shelast followed up four minutes later with his first power play goal of the night off an assist by Drew Dobson.

"Everyone kept telling me to shoot high glove side. That is where I like to put it and it was open," said Shelast.

Jared Brown capitalized off a mistake by the Huskies as he picked up a loose puck in the Huskie's defensive end and scored a short handed goal for the Wildcats at 13:24 of the first period.

Northern Michigan had an opportunity to extend their lead to 4-2 four minutes into the second period as they a shot bounce off the post.

Michigan Tech junior goaltender Michael-Lee Teslak made a great save three minutes later to keep the Huskies within striking distance. He would finish the game with 16 saves.

Shelast then added his second power play goal of the night as he scored at 8:28 of the second period to tie the game at 2-2. Dobson earned his second assist of the night on the goal. Geoff Kinrade also assisted on the goal.

The Black and Gold narrowly escaped another great scoring opportunity by the Wildcats late in the second period. Two Wildcats were on a breakaway before they were called for off sides.

TJ Miller scored the game-winning goal for the Wildcats as his shot from between the circles snuck by Teslak at 3:43 of the third period. He was assisted on the goal by Nick Sirota and Matt Butcher.

Brian Stewart picked up the win in goal for the Wildcats as he finished the game with 20 saves.

Michigan Tech will wrap-up play in the Superior Showcase Sunday as they host Lake Superior State at 5:37 p.m.
