Huskies Move Into Eighth in WCHA Standings With 14
Points
ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Peter Rouleau (Hancock, Mich.) poured in a
goal and two assists, including the game-winning lamplighter at the
12:03 mark of the second period to pave the way for a 4-1 victory
and series split for the Michigan Tech hockey team in front of
4,262 at Sullivan Arena Saturday night. Goaltender Michael-Lee
Teslak (Fernie, B.C.) turned aside 25-of-26 shots in the win and
saw his season record improve to 5-5-1.
The Huskies lit up the scoreboard first at the 14:16 mark of the
opening period when Tyler Shelast (Kelowna, B.C.) and Rouleau
teamed up on a pretty 2-on-1 break after Lars Helminen (Brighton,
Mich.) created the opportunity near the UAA blue line. Rouleau
bided his time at the left circle and masterfully sent a pass over
to Shelast right in front of Seawolf netminder Nathan Lawson.
Shelast then ripped a shot up high past Lawson on the glove side.
The goal was Shelast's eighth of the season, while the assists were
the 13th and 10th of the campaign for Rouleau and Helminen.
UAA's Josh Lunden knotted the score at 1-1 just 34 seconds later
with a backhander that got past Teslak on the stick side. Mat
Robinson and Jay Beagle provided the helpers on the tally.
Michigan Tech scored the first of three unanswered goals to
conclude the contest at 12:03 of the middle frame, as Rouleau
capitalized on a crafty offensive play set up by rookie Drew Dobson
(Palatine, Ill.) to notch his sixth marker of the year. While
shielding an Alaska Anchorage defenseman with his body, and puck in
hand near the left corner boards, Dobson sent a shot on net that
bounced off Lawson to a waiting Rouleau. Rouleau's shot solved
Lawson top shelf and gave the Huskies the cushion they needed to
slowly put the game away. Dobson picked up his third assist of the
campaign and Malcolm Gwilliam (Kamloops, B.C.) extended his point
streak to two games by chipping in the second asist on the goal,
his fourth of the season.
After trailing 11-5 in shots on goal in the first period, the
Huskies out-shot UAA by a 15-9 clip in the second period.
The visitors built a two-goal cushion during a 5-on-3 power play
with less that two minutes into the third stanza as a result of a
goal from the high slot off the stick of Geoff Kinrade (Nelson,
B.C.). Kinrade wristed the shot over Lawson's shoulder on the glove
side. Rouleau completed his trifecta on the night with the first
assist and Helminen contributed the second assist to give him two
helpers on the evening.
Jimmy Kerr (Leduc, Alta.) put an end to any potential comeback for
the Seawolves with an empty-net goal -- his sixth tally of the year
-- at the 19:00 mark of the final period. Jordan Foote (Edmonton,
Alta.) and Kinrade each recorded assists on the empty-netter.
Lawson made 25 saves for Alaska Anchorage (11-12-3, 7-12-1 WCHA) in
the game and watched his record drop to 9-10-2 on the season.
Michigan Tech (11-13-2, 6-10-2 WCHA) posted a 29-26 final edge in
shots on goal, including a 24-15 mark in the final two stanzas.
The Huskies converted on one of their four power plays, while the
Seawolves were held in check on five chances with a man
advantage.
Tech heads back to Houghton for a two-game series against Colorado
College next Friday (Jan. 26) and Saturday (Jan. 27) at the John
MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Both games are set to start at 7:07
p.m.
