HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Michigan Tech erased a 2-0 deficit as a
result of three third-period goals, with the punctuation mark of
its comeback coming at the 11:53 mark of the period when assistant
captain Tyler Skworchinski (Marathon, Ont.) recorded his second
game-winning goal of the year in a 3-2 victory and series sweep of
16th-ranked Bemidji State Saturday night at the John MacInnes
Student Ice Arena. The win pushed the Huskies' home record to 6-4-1
and their non-conference record to 5-3-0 on the season.
The Beavers jumped out of the gates with the first two goals of the
evening with one in each of the first two periods.
Blaine Jarvis opened up the scoring on the power play at the 6:30
mark of the first period when he corralled a bouncing puck in the
slot and wristed a shot past Tech goalie Rob Nolan (Sherwood Park,
Alta.) in the five-hole. Ryan Miller and John Vadnais earned
assists on the tally.
Bemidji State (12-7-3, 7-2-3 CHA) gained a two-goal cushion at 5:22
of the second stanza as Matt Pope took a well-timed pass from Joey
Moggach in the low slot to beat Nolan up high on the glove side.
Matt Allen also picked up a helper on the goal.
The third period proved to be an offensive clinic for the home
team, with three consecutive goals coming in a span of less than 12
minutes..
While Bemidji State's Shane Holman was in the penalty box for being
whistled for two minors, Tyler Shelast (Kelowna, B.C.) lit up the
scoreboard just 40 seconds into the period for Tech with a tip in
front that whizzed by Beaver goalie Orlando Alamano top shelf on
the glove side. Shelast's marker was his seventh of the campaign
and third with a man advantage. Lars Helminen (Brighton, Mich.)
took the original shot from the point that Shelast converted to
secure the first assist, while Jimmy Kerr (Leduc, Alta.)
contributed his ninth assist of the year with the second
helper.
The Huskies made it a 3-2 game at 7:27 by capitalizing on a bit of
puck luck near the BSU net. With Tech holding possession of the
puck near the corner boards, Alex Gagne (Rock Forest, Que.) grabbed
the puck and quickly released a shot from the left circle that
confused Alamano. The netminder seemingly had the puck in hand, but
it ended up trickling through his legs into the back of the net.
Gagne's goal was his fourth of 2006-07 and was assisted by Helminen
and Peter Rouleau (Hancock, Mich.). Helminen picked up the ninth
helper of his senior year, while Rouleau retained his lead on the
Huskies' scoring chart by tacking on his ninth assist of the season
and 15th point overall.
Skworchinski used an outstanding individual effort to put the nail
in the coffin for Michigan Tech (10-12-2, 5-9-2 WCHA). The
centerman stole the puck from a Bemidji State defenseman and took
advantage of enough time and space to create a scoring opportunity
he would later bury. Skworchinski unleashed a shot from the high
slot that glanced high above Alamano's glove. The unassisted
marker, was Skworchinski's seventh goal of the season and second of
the weekend.
Bemidji State mounted plenty of offensive pressure for the
remainder of the contest, but it wasn't enough to solve Nolan. The
Beavers pulled Alamano with 58 seconds left in regulation and later
called a timeout with 39 ticks left on the clock. A last-ditch
flurry was thwarted by a stingy Tech defense that allowed the home
team to hold on for the victory.
For the evening, MTU outshot BSU by a count of 25-17, including a
10-4 mark in the third stanza.
Each team scored once in four power-play chances.
Nolan finished with 15 saves and improved to 6-7-1 on the year for
the Huskies. Alamano stopped 22 shots and saw his record fall to
3-2-0 on the season.
Tech returns to Western Collegiate Hockey Association competition
next Friday (Jan. 19) and Saturday (Jan. 20) with a two-game set at
Alaska Anchorage at Sullivan Arena. Friday's game will start at
11:37 p.m., with Saturday's tilt set to begin at 11:07 p.m.
Notes: MTU has now swept four series this season, its highest such
total since the 1997-98 season when it also swept four teams ...
Helminen's two assists pushed his career point total to 13-58--71
and moved him into a tie for 14th with John Haddad (27-44--71) and
Bob Lorimer (16-55--71) on the all-time list.
