HOUGHTON, Mich. - Sparked by a power play early in the third
period, the Michigan Tech Huskies poured in three third-period
goals to hand the 16th-ranked Bemidji State Beavers (12-6-3, 7-2-3
CHA) just their second loss in seven games against Western
Collegiate Hockey Association competition this season by a 4-1
score at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena Friday night.
Tech (9-12-2, 5-9-2 WCHA), received points from eight different
players, including goals from four different Huskies to secure its
first home win since Nov. 11 against Minnesota Duluth.
The home team held a 1-0 lead after two periods courtesy of a
mid-second period Ryan Angelow (Mississauga, Ont.) tip-in off a
long wrist shot by freshman defenseman Drew Dobson (Palatine, Ill.)
from the right point.
A five-minute major accompanied by a game misconduct penalty called
against Bemidji State's Ryan Miller gave the Huskies an opportunity
to add to their slim lead early in the final period, and they were
able to capitalize.
Jordan Foote (Edmonton, Alta.) made a sharp pass to Tyler
Skworchinski (Marathon, Ont.) from behind the BSU net, and the
senior assistant captain buried the one-timer at 7:34, putting his
team ahead by two goals with his sixth goal and 16th point of the
campaign.
Less than four minutes later, Alex Lord (Magog, Que.) received a
pass from Ryan Bunger (Sammamish, Wash.) in the same position, and
backhanded it off BSU goaltender Matt Climie's skate for a 3-0
advantage.
Tyler Scofield scored with less than three minutes remaining for
the Beavers, ending a valiant try by MTU goalie Michael-Lee Teslak
(Fernie, B.C.) to complete his third shutout victory of the
season.
For Scofield, who was denied on two excellent scoring chances by a
very sharp Teslak, it was a long time coming. The Bemidji State
forward had a quality chance on his team's very first shot of the
game seven minutes into the first period, and was stoned twice more
by Teslak before finding the back of the net.
MTU sophomore Malcolm Gwilliam (Kamloops, B.C.) iced the game with
an unassisted empty-net goal in the final minute of play.
Bunger, a freshman, continued his strong play of late by tallying
his second and third assists of the season on the goals by Angelow
and Lord.
Tech finished 1-for-7 on the power play, while Bemidji State went
1-for-4 with a man advantage.
The Huskies outshot the Beavers by a count of 28-23.
Teslak improved to 4-5-1 on the season after making 22 saves in the
victory. Climie turned aside 24 shots, but fell to 9-3-3 for the
year.
The two teams meet again tomorrow night at the John MacInnes
Student Ice Arena. Opening faceoff is slated for 7:07 p.m.
The four goals scored by Tech were the most since a 4-1 home win
over UMD on November 11, 2006 ... With nine wins this season the
Huskies have achieved their highest win total since 2002-03 when
they finished 10-24-4 ... MTU is now 5-1-0 in 2006-07 when it
scores the first goal of the game and 4-3-0 when leading after two
periods ... Malcolm Gwilliam (1-1--2) tallied his first
multiple-point game of the season tonight and his second as a
collegian ... Gwilliam's empty-netter was Tech's first since its
4-1 victory over Minnesota Duluth Nov. 11.
