Armstrong Tallies First Double-Double as a Collegian for
Huskies
MARQUETTE, Mich. -- Despite handing Northern Michigan (9-0, 1-0
GLIAC) just its third individual game loss of the season to start
the match, the Michigan Tech volleyball team (4-5, 0-1 GLIAC) was
defeated by a 3-1 (25-30, 30-19, 30-10, 30-13) clip Tuesday night
in front of 602 at Vandament Arena. The match, which served as the
Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both
teams, was one of two meetings between the Upper Peninsula rivals
this season. The rematch is slated for Tuesday, Oct. 10 at the SDC
Gym.
The Huskies jumped out of the gates with a vengeance to start the
evening, outhitting NMU by a .393 to .189 clip to take game
one.
From there, however, the Wildcats regained their composure and
steadily improved their hitting percentage (.400, .455, .567) each
game to seal a victory.
"Certainly game one was a bright spot for us, but that was it,"
said eighth-year head coach Krista Mikesch. "After that I don't
think we were ready to play. We got the results we deserved and we
have to be better."
"We started to play a slower tempo game in the final three games,
which isn't Michigan Tech volleyball," said Mikesch. "Northern is a
great team and you can't get away from your style of play and think
you can beat a team with talent like that."
Superior Player of the Match, redshirt sophomore Veronica Armstrong
(Battle Creek, Mich./Central) notched the first double-double of
her career to lead the Huskies. Armstrong amassed 10 kills and 14
digs, both of which were team highs. Sophomore Jen Jung (Andover,
Minn./Coon Rapids) finished with eight kills, three block assists
and one block solo. Redshirt freshman Kelly Jorgensen (Eden
Prairie, Minn.) pitched in seven kills and junior Kali Jeter
(Middleton, Wis.) contributed six kills.
Senior Amanda Mackethun (Waconia, Minn./Mayer Lutheran) spread
around 21 assists, compared to 13 helpers from freshman Alison
Greene (Andover, Minn/Totino Grace). Sophomore Kelsey Skoog (Long
Lake, Minn./Orono) returned to her libero spot and picked up 10
digs after missing her four previous contests.
Overall, NMU (.393) held a sizable advantage in hitting percentage
over Tech (.150). The Huskies had 9.5 blocks, while the Wildcats
finished with 10.
Tech will be back in action Saturday (Sept. 9) for its home opener
against Gannon at the SDC Gym. The contest is set to start at 4
p.m.
