FERRIS STATE WINS FIVE-GAME MARATHON OVER MICHIGAN TECH

Jung Leads Huskies With 19 Kills

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The Michigan Tech (7-9, 3-4 GLIAC) volleyball team held a 2-1 lead, but Ferris State (13-3, 5-2 GLIAC) rebounded with wins in the final two games to record a 3-2 victory Sunday afternoon at the SDC Gym. The Bulldogs won by scores of 27-30, 30-24, 25-30, 30-15, 15-10.

"It's certainly a tough match to lose, but we battled until the end," said head coach Krista Mikesch. "Ferris State has a lot of size and it's a team that always plays us tough here. That being said, we to have to get over the hump in these close matches. Hopefully we can take the next step during our road trip next week."

The Huskies led for all but the first two points in game one and hit a team-best .370 (20-3--46).

FSU and MTU traded points for much of the second game, but a 7-1 run to close the middle frame was the difference for the Bulldogs.

In a similar fashion to the first game, Tech spotted the visitors an early advantage and then proceeded to open a lead it would not relinquish. With the score 9-9, the home team captured 11 of the next 14 points to build a 20-12 cushion. FSU cut the score to 25-23 later on, but MTU sustained its lead to hold on for a five-point triumph.

The Bulldogs hit a blistering .629 (24-2--35) in game four and pulled away quickly en route to a 15-point win.

Game five proved to be a tight session until the final four plays. After trailing 6-2 to start the frame, the Huskies went on a 6-3 run to cut the score to 9-8. The two teams traded points until the score was 11-10 in favor of FSU. The Bulldogs then utilized a kill and three straight service aces to pull out a hard-fought victory to end the match.

Four Huskies registered double-digit performances in kills, headlined by the 19 kills tallied by sophomore Jen Jung (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids). Jung hit. 472 (19-2--36) and also added one block solo and one block assist. Sophomore Kelly Jorgensen (Eden Prairie, Minn.) recorded 12 kills off a .478 (12-1--23) attack percentage, while also picking up three block solos and three block assists.

Sophomore Veronica Armstrong (Battle Creek, Mich./Central) finished with 11 kills, nine digs, three service aces and one block assist. Sophomore Christa Jung (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids) pitched in 10 kills, four digs and one service ace. Junior Kali Jeter (Middleton, Wis.) amassed 12 digs, six kills and two block assists.

Freshman Alison Greene (Andover, Minn./Totino Grace) engineered a career-high 34 assists and senior Amanda Mackenthun (Waconia, Minn./Mayer Lutheran) doled out 24 helpers.

Sophomore Kelsey Skoog (Long Lake, Minn./Orono) led all players with 19 digs.

Ferris State enjoyed a .344 (84-22--180) hitting percentage, compared to a .267 (64-18--172) mark for Michigan Tech. The Huskies won the blocking battle by a 9-5 margin.

Tech now kicks off a three-game stretch on the road with matches at Wayne State (Sept. 30), Hillsdale (Oct. 1) and Lake Superior State (Oct. 2).
