HUSKIES CAP NORTHERN MICHIGAN TOURNAMENT WITH 3-0 WIN OVER UW-PARKSIDE

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The Michigan Tech volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (30-26, 30-21, 30-17) victory over Wisconsin-Parkside in the final match of the Northern Michigan and TCF Bank Tournament Saturday night. Tech avenged a 3-1 (30-24, 19-30, 30-28, 30-25) setback to Emporia State earlier in the day and finished the weekend with a 1-3 record.

"The last match was the one we had to win, as UW-Parkside is a regional opponent," said eighth-year head coach Krista Mikesch. "We came ready to play and fought hard the whole way. The momentum we gained from this win should help throughout the season.

"We played a lot of volleyball this weekend, said Mikesch. "This tournament will also give us a chance to see what we need to work on in practice. We saw a variety of different teams here that forced us to adapt to their style and that should be a good learning experience for us."

The Huskies and Rangers battled back-and-forth to start the contest, but Michigan Tech put together a 14-4 run to close the opening game. Sophomore Veronica Armstrong (Battle Creek, Mich./Central) ended the Huskies' offensive explosion at match point with one of her team's 13 kills in the game off an assist from senior Amanda Mackenthun (Waconia, Minn./Mayer Lutheran).

Although Tech fell behind early in game two, it never trailed after the teams were tied at seven apiece. A 12-3 run, started by two kills from junior Kali Jeter (Middleton, Wis.), gave the Huskies a commanding 23-13 advantage that paved the way for a 30-21 triumph. Tech compiled 12 kills in the middle frame and compiled a match-best .296 hitting percentage.

Michigan Tech offered a blocking exhibition in the final game of the evening, as the Huskies notched eight of their 18 total team blocks in the session. Sophomore Jen Jung (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids) chipped in three of her seven overall block assists in the third game as well. Tech ended with a 30-17 win to end the tournament on a good note.

On the evening, the Huskies finished with a .231 hitting percentage compared to a -.010 mark for Wisconsin-Parkside.

Armstrong led all Tech players with seven kills, and the sophomore also contributed three digs, one block solo and two block assists. In addition to her seven block assists, Jen Jung also had a team-best three block solos and connected for six kills. Twin-sister Christa Jung (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids) picked up six kills, one block solo and one block assist.

Jeter finished with four kills, four digs and five block assists, while redshirt freshman Kelly Jorgensen (Eden Prairie, Minn.) came in with six kills, four block assists and one block solo. Fellow redshirt freshman Kaari Nevanen (Duluth, Minn/East) drilled two service aces and three block assists to close a strong weekend start to her collegiate career.

Mackenthun ended the match with 17 helpers, while freshman Alison Greene (Anover, Minn./Totino Grace) had nine assists.

In the first match of the day against Emporia State, the Huskies managed to take game two, 30-19, but lost the remaining three games by a total of 13 points, including five points in the final two games.

Jen Jung led all players with 18 kills and she also secured seven block assists and two block solos. Jorgensen finished with 10 kills, four block assists and two block solos. Jeter pitched in eight kills, 10 digs and four block assists. Armstrong nearly tallied a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs. Christa Jung had six kills, five block assists and one block solo. Nevanen turned in nine kills, six digs and two service aces.

Mackethun doled out 28 assists and Greene picked up 22 helpers. Sophomore Kesley Skoog (Long Lake, Minn./Orono) led Tech with 14 digs from her libero post.

The Huskies poured in 16 total team blocks and 53 digs, compared to 10 team blocks and 77 digs for ESU.

Michigan Tech (1-3) will travel to Romeoville, Ill., next weekend, where it will participate in the Flyer Festival hosted by Lewis. The Huskies open with a date against Lewis at 8 p.m. on Thursday (Aug. 31). On Friday (Sept. 1), Tech challenges St. Mary's at 12 noon before playing Winona State at 6 p.m. West Forida will be the opponent in the final match of the tournament at 10 a.m. on Saturday (Sept. 2).
