MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The Michigan Tech volleyball team cruised to
a 3-0 (30-26, 30-21, 30-17) victory over Wisconsin-Parkside in the
final match of the Northern Michigan and TCF Bank Tournament
Saturday night. Tech avenged a 3-1 (30-24, 19-30, 30-28, 30-25)
setback to Emporia State earlier in the day and finished the
weekend with a 1-3 record.
"The last match was the one we had to win, as UW-Parkside is a
regional opponent," said eighth-year head coach Krista Mikesch. "We
came ready to play and fought hard the whole way. The momentum we
gained from this win should help throughout the season.
"We played a lot of volleyball this weekend, said Mikesch. "This
tournament will also give us a chance to see what we need to work
on in practice. We saw a variety of different teams here that
forced us to adapt to their style and that should be a good
learning experience for us."
The Huskies and Rangers battled back-and-forth to start the
contest, but Michigan Tech put together a 14-4 run to close the
opening game. Sophomore Veronica Armstrong (Battle Creek,
Mich./Central) ended the Huskies' offensive explosion at match
point with one of her team's 13 kills in the game off an assist
from senior Amanda Mackenthun (Waconia, Minn./Mayer Lutheran).
Although Tech fell behind early in game two, it never trailed after
the teams were tied at seven apiece. A 12-3 run, started by two
kills from junior Kali Jeter (Middleton, Wis.), gave the Huskies a
commanding 23-13 advantage that paved the way for a 30-21 triumph.
Tech compiled 12 kills in the middle frame and compiled a
match-best .296 hitting percentage.
Michigan Tech offered a blocking exhibition in the final game of
the evening, as the Huskies notched eight of their 18 total team
