GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Aided by a five-gaol third period,
10th-ranked North Dakota skated past the Michigan Tech hockey team
6-0 in the final game of the regular season Saturday night at Ralph
Engelstad Arena.
Like Friday night, neither team scored in the first period of
play.
The Fighting Sioux (23-14-1, 16-12-0 WCHA) scored the first goal of
night at the 6:17 mark of the second stanza, as T.J. Oshie picked
up his 20th tally of the season off an assist from Rastislav
Spirko.
Tech outshot UND 9-6 in the middle frame.
A shorthanded marker off the stick off Drew Stafford at 3:21 of the
third period, was the first of North Dakota's four goals in the
first seven minutes of the final stanza. Brian Lee scored at 5:16,
Andrew Kozek struck at 6:04 and Mike Prpich netted a goal at
6:32.
Netminder Michael-Lee Teslak was then pulled after stopping
18-of-23 shots for MTU.
Kozek added one more tally on the power play at 15:58.
Rob Nolan made five saves in 13:28 of action for Tech, compared to
Jordan Parise, who turned aside all 24 shots he faced for the
Fighting Sioux.
UND went 1-for-4 with a man advantage, while MTU was scoreless in
six power-play chances.
Michigan Tech (7-23-6, 6-16-6 WCHA), which finished eighth in the
Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings with 18 points,
will now travel to Wisconsin next weekend for a best-of-three
series against the Badgers in the opening round of the WCHA
playoffs. Opening faceoff is slated for 8:07 p.m. EST Friday (Mar.
10).
