ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- Tyler Shelast's goal 20 seconds into the
third period proved to be the game-tying marker, as the Michigan
Tech hockey team compiled a 2-2 overtime tie with #19 St. Cloud
State Saturday night at the National Hockey Center. Brandon
Schwartz turned in a goal and an assist, while Michael-Lee Teslak
stopped 40 shots between the pipes for the Huskies.
The home team provided the only scoring in the opening period, as
Nate Dey recorded his fourth goal of the year at the 9:45 mark off
assists from T.J. McElroy and Billy Hengen.
Tech knotted the score at 1-1 when Schwartz blasted home a
one-timer from the point on the power-play at 13:36 of the second
stanza. Schwartz, who netted the 10th marker of his senior
campaign, was assisted by Nick Anderson and Lars Helminen.
Anderson's helper was his seventh of the year, while Helminen was
credited with his team-best 17th assist of the season.
SCSU quickly answered with a goal of its own less than two minutes
later to make it a 2-1 contest. Matt Stephenson scored his second
tally of the year when his shot bounced off an MTU defender into
the back of the net. Dey and Brock Hooton earned assists on the
play.
Shelast made the score 2-2 with his ninth lamplighter of the year
off an assist from Schwartz. After taking a quick pass off a
faceoff from Schwartz, Shelast skated the puck nearly the entire
length of the ice before releasing a wrist shot from just inside
the right circle past St. Cloud State goaltender Bobby Goepfert
high on the glove side.
Neither team was able to light up the scoreboard for the duration
of the game, but Chris Conner nearly gave Tech the victory in the
waning seconds of regulation. With his team on the penalty kill,
Conner picked the pocket of a St. Cloud State defenseman and skated
in all alone on a breakaway, but was unable to get off a shot on a
waiting Goepfert.
Goepfert finished with 27 saves for the Huskies of SCSU.
MTU was 1-for-5 on the power play and held St. Cloud State
scoreless in five chances with a man advantage.
SCSU amassed 42 shots, compared to 29 for the Huskies of MTU.
The tie gives Michigan Tech a 7-21-6 overall record and a 6-14-6
mark in conference play. St. Cloud State, meanwhile, is now 18-12-4
overall and 13-11-2 in league competition.
The Huskies conclude the regular season next Friday (Mar. 3) and
Saturday (Mar. 4) with a pair of games at North Dakota. Friday's
game begins at 8:37 p.m. and Saturday's tilt will start at 8:07
p.m. EST.
