LATE RALLY GIVES TECH 4-4 TIE WITH #3 WISCONSIN

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Trailing by two goals entering the third period, a resilient Michigan Tech hockey team responded with two goals in the final stanza and recorded a 4-4 overtime tie with No. 3 Wisconsin in front of 2.979 fans Saturday night at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Senior John Scott provided the game-tying lamplighter with less than three minutes left in the contest.

The Badgers (21-7-3, 15-6-3 WCHA) registered the game's first two goals in a one- minute span midway through the first period. Tom Gilbert struck on the power-play at 9:49 and Matthew Ford chipped in an even-strength marker at 10:57.

After two UW players were whistled for penalties, the Huskies converted on a 5-on-3 power play at the 15:55 mark of the opening frame. Senior Nick Anderson beat Badger goaltender Brian Elliott five-hole from the top corner of the left circle, which pushed his season goal total to nine. Tyler Shelast started the play in the corner boards with a nifty pass through traffic that found its way to Chris Conner. The alternate captain slid the puck over to Anderson, who recorded his sixth power-play tally of the year. Conner and Shelast earned their 11th and eight assist of the year, respectively.

Jack Skille gave the visitors a 3-1 lead just over two minutes into the second period with his ninth goal of the season.

The Huskies (7-20-5, 6-13-5 WCHA) answered at 4:18 of the period off a marker from junior Tyler Skworchinski. After a Lars Helminen shot from the right point bounced around the net, Skworchinski quickly fired a shot that whizzed past Elliott's right shoulder on the short side. The goal was Skworchinski's second of the season, while Helminen was credited with his team-leading 16th helper of the year.

A shorthanded tally off the stick of Joe Pavelski at 8:43 of the middle session capped the Badgers scoring on the night.

The Huskies cut the UW lead to one goal at the midpoint of the third period with their second power-play marker of the evening. Taggart Desmet lit up the scoreboard for the seventh time in his senior campaign at 10:09 off assists from Conner and Ryan Angelow. Angelow sent a pass over to Conner right in front of the net and from there Conner made a pin-point pass to a waiting Desmet, who snapped the puck into an open net on Elliott's stick side. The assist was Conner's second of the night and 12th of the season. Angelow moved his assist total to three for the year.

Scott secured his first game-tying goal of the 2005-06 campaign and his third tally overall at the 17:23 mark of the final stanza. The defenseman corralled a bouncing puck in front of the net and made a flashy move to his left and slipped the puck by Elliott on the stick side once again. Captain Brandon Schwartz notched the lone assist on the play, the 14th of his senior year.

Neither squad could solve the opposing goalie in overtime, which preserved a 4-4 stalemate.

Rookie Michael-Lee Teslak made 44 saves between the pipes for Tech and improved his season record to 7-10-3. Elliott stopped 25 shots for the UW and is now 18-2-3 for the year.

MTU went 2-for-6 with a man advantage, compared to a 1-for-5 clip from the Badgers.

Michigan Tech travels to St. Cloud State for a two-game tilt at the National Hockey Center next Friday (Feb. 24 and Saturday (Feb. 25). Both games are set to start at 8:07 p.m.

Notes: Conner's two point effort was his ninth multi-point game of the season and 32nd of his career . . . The Huskies have now compiled 17 points in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings, which eclipses last year's total of 16 points with four regular season games remaining . . . Tech has amassed four league points against top 5 teams this season, including a 4-2 win over Wisconsin (Dec. 9), a 2-2 tie with Minnesota (Feb. 11) last weekend and tonight's 4-4 draw vs. the Badgers.
