HUSKIES RECORD 2-2 TIE IN WINTER CARNIVAL FINALE

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Tyler Shelast and Nick Anderson each scored a goal and goaltender Rob Nolan made a career-high 48 saves to help Michigan Tech secure a 2-2 overtime tie against No. 1 Minnesota Saturday night at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The tie allowed the Huskies to garner one point in the two-game Winter Carnival series.

The Golden Gophers (19-6-5, 14-5-3 WCHA) started the game's scoring with a power-play tally at the 13:57 mark of the opening frame, when Phil Kessel recorded his 13th marker of the season.

Tech (7-19-4, 6-12-4 WCHA) tied the game at 1-1 later in the period, as Shelast netted his eight overall goal of the year and seventh with a man advantage at 19:34. The winger was camped out in front of the net and a shot by Lars Helminen from the point bounced around the back of the net and found Shelast's stick right in front of UM netminder Kellen Briggs. Shelast poked the puck past Briggs on the glove side. Helminen's assist was his team-leading 15th of the season, while Justin St. Louis was credited with his seventh helper on the season.

Alex Goligoski made the score 2-1 in favor of the Golden Gophers at 2:14 of the second frame.

Neither team scored again until Anderson chipped in his second lamplighter of the weekend and the eighth of his senior campaign. Taggart Desemet glanced a shot off Briggs from the left circle and the rebound came out to Anderson, who beat Briggs glove side. The helper was the 10th of the season for Desmet.

Both teams clamped down defensively for the remainder of the game, which transpired into a 2-2 stalemate.

Nolan, who made 23 saves in relief of Michael-Lee Teslak Friday night, finished the weekend with 71 saves. Briggs stopped 32 shots for UM.

Michigan Tech went 1-for-7 on the power play, while Minnesota was 1-for-8.

The Huskies welcome Wisconsin to the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena next Friday (Feb. 17) and Saturday (Feb. 18) for their final home series of the 2005-06 regular season. The puck will drop at 7:07 p.m. both nights.
