DETROIT, Mich. -- Aided by two goals from Matt Hunwick,
10th-ranked Michigan (13-7-0, 8-5-0 CCHA) defeated Michigan Tech
(8-9-2, 5-7-2 WCHA), 4-1, in the second game of the 42nd annual
Great Lakes Invitational Friday night at Joe Louis Arena. Junior
Tyler Shelast (Kelowna, B.C.) tallied his sixth goal in five career
GLI games for the Huskies in the contest.
The two teams played an even game for much of the first period, but
the Wolverines jumped on the board first at the 18:43 mark when
Hunwick sniped a shot from the right circle up high past Tech
netminder Rob Nolan (Sherwood Park, Alta.) on the glove side.
Hunwick's goal was his first of the year and was assisted by Kevin
Porter.
UM held a 10-8 shot advantage heading into the intermission.
Michigan built a two-goal lead at 4:14 of the second period as
Travis Turnbull used a backhander right in front that beat Nolan on
the stick side. Porter picked up his second helper of the night,
while T.J. Hensick was credited with the second assist on the
goal.
The Wolverines struck two more times in the middle frame -- once at
10:11 and again at 14:34. Hunwick converted his second tally of the
evening off a rebound after a Chad Kolarik shot found his stick in
front of the net. Brian Lebler completed UM's scoring with a quick
wrist shot that slipped between Nolan's legs from the slot. Morgan
Ward and Tim Miller picked up helpers for the Wolverines.
Michigan carried a 23-17 lead in shots after two periods.
Michigan Tech lit up the scoreboard with just 1:16 remaining in the
contest, as Shelast buried a rebound to secure his fourth marker of
the season and 10th point of the year. Sophomore Geoff Kinrade
(Nelson, B.C.) started the scoring chance by directing a pass from
the point over to Jimmy Kerr (Leduc, Alta.) inside the left circle.
Kerr quickly wristed a shot on net that bounced off UM goalie Billy
Sauer to Shelast. Shelast banged home the extra chance in front.
Kerr picked up his team-leading eighth assist and 13th point of the
year, while Kinrade pushed his season point total to 1-7--8.
The Wolverines finished with 30 shots, compared to the Huskies'
28.
Nolan made 26 saves for Tech and Sauer stopped 27 shots for UM.
MTU went 1-for-4 on the power play, while Michigan was held in
check in five chances with a man advantage.
The Huskies will meet Harvard in the third-place game of the GLI
Saturday afternoon at 4:06 p.m. at Joe Louis Arena. Michigan and
Michigan State will battle for the GLI title in the nightcap at
7:36 p.m.
Note: Saturday's game will mark the first meeting between Tech and
Harvard since the 1980 GLI.
