HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Andrew Gordon's goal with 11 seconds left in
overtime lifted 10th-ranked St. Cloud State (8-3-3, 6-3-3 WCHA)
past the Michigan Tech (6-6-2, 3-5-2 WCHA) hockey team, 3-2, in
front of an announced crowd of 2,194 Saturday night at the John
MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The Huskies of SCSU used a 35-save
performance from All-American netminder Bobby Goepfert, including
14 stops in the third period, to extend their unbeaten streak to
nine games.
Goepfert set the tone early, turning away two point-blank shots off
the stick of Tyler Shelast (Kelowna, British Columbia) in the
game's opening minutes.
Tech held an 8-7 shot advantage after one period of play.
MTU lit up the scoreboard first at the 8:07 mark of the second
period when freshman Ryan Bunger (Sammamish, Wash.) used hard work
to compile his first goal as a collegian with help from Jake
Wilkens (Eagle River, Alaska) and Peter Rouleau (Hancock, Mich.).
Rouleau started the scoring sequence with a nifty move around a
Husky defenseman near the boards and then the centerman sent a pass
to Wilkens in the slot. Wilkens wristed a shot on net that
eventually bounced off Goepfert towards Bunger, who was battling
for position just to Goepfert's right. Wilkens recorded his fourth
assist of the season, while Rouleau was credited with his second
helper of the year on the goal.
Due to a major checking from behind penalty called on Bunger, the
visitors were afforded a five-minute power play at the 15:05 mark
of the middle session. The prolonged power play was thwarted by a
stifling Tech penalty-killing unit that nearly scored a goal of its
own.
A pipe proved to be Goepfert's best friend on at least one occasion
during the power play when Tyler Skworchinski (Marathon, Ontario)
was able to force a giveaway that led to a 2-on-1 opportunity with
teammate Jimmy Kerr (Leduc, Alberta) streaking down the ice on the
opposite wing. Kerr unloaded a rocket in the high slot that caromed
off the pipe away from Goepfert.
For the period, Tech secured a 14-5 lead in the shot column.
SCSU scored twice in just over seven minutes in the third period --
once at 10:34 and again at 17:38 -- to pull ahead by a 2-1 score.
Marty Mjelleli notched his first marker of the 2006-07 campaign off
an assist from Matt Hartman and Mjelleli struck again, this time
with helpers from Hartman and Michael Olson.
Michigan Tech quickly answered, however, as Ryan Angelow
(Mississauga, Ontario) beat Goepfert five-hole with a shot from the
slot at the 18:01 mark of the final stanza. Shelast moved his
season point total to nine after tallying his fifth assist of the
year in setting up Angelow's lamplighter. Geoff Kinrade (Nelson,
British Columbia) became the Huskies' top scoring defenseman by
chipping in the second assist on the goal, the fifth overall helper
of his sophomore campaign.
The final two minutes of regulation proved fruitless for both teams
in terms of scoring, thus forcing the overtime period.
Michigan Tech mustered a 15-8 shot margin for the third stanza and
a 37-20 advantage before the extra session began.
St. Cloud State amassed the only three shots in overtime and the
last one proved to be the game-winner at 4:49. After keeping the
puck in Tech's zone, Justin Fletcher found Gordon, who sniped a
shot from the right circle up high past MTU goalie Rob Nolan
(Sherwood Park, Alberta). Matt Stephenson added the second assist
for SCSU.
Goepfert improved to 6-3-3 on the season, while Nolan dropped to
3-3-1 for the year in a 20-save effort for the Huskies.
Both teams were held in check on the power play -- St. Cloud State
on four chances and Michigan Tech in two opportunities.
Michigan Tech hosts the No. 1 team in the country -- Minnesota --
next Friday (Dec. 8) and Saturday (Dec. 9) at the John MacInnes
Student Ice Arena. The puck will drop at 7:07 p.m. both nights,
with both contests scheduled to be televised on Fox Sports Net
North.
