GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Sophomore Malcolm Gwilliam (Kamloops,
British Columbia) broke a 2-2 tie at the 9:08 mark of the third
period with his third goal of the season to launch the Michigan
Tech hockey team to a 3-2 victory and series sweep of 17th-ranked
North Dakota in front of 11,671 at the Ralph Engelstad Arena
Saturday night. Rob Nolan (Sherwood Park, Alberta) finished with 30
saves for the Huskies and improved his record to 5-4-1 on the
year.
Like Friday night, neither team was able to light up the scoreboard
in the first period. UND held a 11-6 shot advantage and carried the
offensive zone for much of the session.
The Fighting Sioux started the evening's scoring just 49 seconds
into the second period, as T.J. Oshie beat sophomore netminder
Nolan top shelf on the glove side from the bottom of the left
circle. Brad Miller and Taylor Chorney each earned assists on the
goal.
Michigan Tech evened the score at 1-1 at the 12:24 mark of the
second stanza when freshman Alex Gagne (Rock Forest, Quebec) put a
rebound past UND goalie Anthony Grieco five-hole to secure his
third goal of the season. Junior Peter Rouleau (Hancock, Mich.)
picked up the lone assist on the goal after taking a shallow angle
shot that Gagne converted. The helper was Rouleau's third of the
year.
The Huskies struck again less than a minute later after junior
Jimmy Kerr (Leduc, Alberta) unintentionally knocked the puck into
the net off his skate. Junior Jordan Foote (Edmonton, Alberta) sent
a pass from neutral ice into the UND zone where Tyler Skworchinski
(Marathon, Ontario) made a quick pass in front that banged off
Kerr's skate past Grieco. The goal was Kerr's fifth of the season,
while Skworchinski and Foote each recorded their fifth helpers of
the year.
Oshie scored his second marker of the evening at the 13:53 mark of
the middle stanza to again tie the score at 2-2.
UND made a goaltending switch before the third period, inserting
Philippe Lamoureux back into the net.
Gwilliam's game-winning tally was a tip-in that slid around
Lamoureux's left blocker. Sophomore John Schwarz (Calgary, Alberta)
rifled a shot from the point that Gwilliam perfectly directed into
the back of the net. The assist was Schwarz's second of the season.
Rouleau was credited with his second assist of the night and fourth
of the 2006-07 slate.
The home team pulled Lamoureux for the extra skater late in
regulation, but its comeback attempt proved fruitless, much like
Friday night.
UND finished with a 32-27 edge in shots on goal for the game.
Tech went 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Fighting Sioux
compiled one tally with a man advantage in seven chances.
Michigan Tech is now 8-8-2 overall and 5-7-2 in the WCHA. North
Dakota dropped to 7-10-1 in all games and 5-8-1 in league
competition.
The Huskies will take a week off before traveling to Joe Louis
Arena in Detroit, Mich., where they will take on Michigan in the
42nd annual Great Lakes Invitational on Friday, December 29th.
Notes: Tech's sweep of UND was its first over the Fighting Sioux
since Jan. 31-Feb. 1, 1992, and the Huskies first sweep of North
Dakota in Grand Forks since Dec. 11-12, 1987 ... Rouleau's
two-point effort was his second multi-point game of the year ...
Gwilliam's gamewinner was his first as a Husky ... With eight wins
this year, MTU has already bested its seven-win total of the
2005-06 campaign.
