HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The Michigan Tech hockey team broke open a
one-goal game with a pair of tallies in the third period to secure
a 4-1 win over Western Collegiate Hockey Association rival
Minnesota Duluth in front of 2,581 fans at the John MacInnes
Student Ice Arena Saturday night. Sophomore goaltender Rob Nolan
(Sherwood Park, Alta.) improved to 3-2-0 on the season after
stopping 20 of the 21 shots he faced between the pipes.
The Huskies recorded the lone marker of the opening period, as
sophomore Malcolm Gwilliam (Kamloops, B.C.) lit the lamp for the
second time of the year at the 15:12 mark. Gwilliam rifled a shot
from the left circle past UMD goaltender Alex Stalock on the glove
side. The play started in Tech's zone when rookie Drew Dobson
(Palatine, Ill.) sent a pass out to freshman Alex Gagne (Rock
Forest, Que.) in the neutral zone. Gagne skated the puck in on the
left wing and left a great drop pass for Gwilliam. The helper was
Dobson's first as a Husky and one of two for Gagne on the
night.
Sophomore Tyler Shelast (Kelowna, B.C.) garnered what proved to be
the game-winning goal of the contest at 9:03 of the second period.
While chasing a lead pass from linemate Gagne, Shelast beat a
risk-taking Stalock to the puck at the bottom of the right dot.
When Stalock went down to make a last ditch effort to corral the
puck, Shelast flipped the puck up high past a sprawling Stalock.
The tally Shelast's fourth of the season. Gagne's second assist of
the contest was his seventh of the campaign and team-leading ninth
point of 2006-07. Sophomore Geoff Kinrade (Nelson, B.C.) started
the play with a tape-to-tape pass from his owns zone to Gagne, thus
giving the blueliner his third assist of the year.
Minnesota Duluth put together its lone goal in the game off a tally
from Drew Akins at the 12:47 mark of the middle period.
Senior Tyler Skworchinski (Marathon, Ont.) provided a pivotal
power-play goal at 8:13 of the final period to stake MTU to a 3-1
advantage. Skworchinski teed up a shot from the top of the right
point that beat Stalock low on the glove side. Kinrade picked up
his second helper of the evening and fourth of the season on the
goal.
The Bulldogs called a timeout with 1:12 left in the game and later
pulled Stalock for an extra skater. However, their attempt proved
futile, as Nolan turned aside any shots in his vicinity.
Skworchinski launched a shot from past center ice into an empty net
with :14 left in regulation to put the final exclamation point on a
Tech win.
Stalock finished with 23 saves in net for UMD and saw his record
fall to 2-5-3 overall.
Michigan Tech (6-3-1, 3-2-1 WCHA) out-shot Minnesota Duluth (2-5-3,
1-5-2 WCHA) 27-21 on the night.
The Huskies went 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Bulldogs were
held in check on three chances with a man advantage.
MTU heads back to the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains next
Friday (Nov. 17) and Saturday (Nov. 18) for a conference series
against the Denver Pioneers at Magness Arena. Friday's game will
start at 9:37 p.m. (EST), with Saturday's tilt scheduled to begin
at 9:07 p.m. (EST).
Notes: Michigan Tech owns a 4-0-1 record at home ... Skworchinski
(2g) and Kinrade (2a) each recorded their first multi-point game of
the year tonight ... Skworchinski's power-play goal was the
Huskies' first since they registered two markers with a man
advantage in a 9-0 win over Alaska Anchorage Oct. 27 ... MTU is
3-1-2 in its last six games against UMD and 5-3-2 in its last 10
contests against the Bulldogs.
