HOUGHTON, Mich. -- For the first time since 1968, a Michigan
Tech hockey game played in Houghton ended in a 0-0 tie, as the
Huskies and Minnesota Duluth played to a scoreless stalemate in
front of 2,629 fans at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena Friday
night. Tech sophomore netminder Michael-Lee Teslak (Fernie, B.C.)
made 16 saves and registered his second consecutive home shutout to
push his season record to 3-1-1.
"I don't know if the score illustrated the kind of game this was
tonight," said MTU head coach Jamie Russell. "It felt a lot like
the Northern Michigan game we played in to start the year. Both
teams had chances and the goaltending was excellent. Obviously, we
would have liked to have gotten the win, but a 3-0-1 mark to start
the home season is something to build on."
"I really thought the Skworchinski, Kerr and Foote line played with
great energy throughout the game," said Russell. We have received
great leadership from that group all year. I was also pleased with
our penalty kill, as we shut out the fifth-best power-play unit in
the country."
UMD rookie goaltender Alex Stalock corralled 27 shots to record his
first shutout as a collegian and third win of the 2006-07
season.
The final shot tally revealed a 27-16 advantage for the
Huskies.
MTU took five penalties, compared to four by the Bulldogs.
Minnesota Duluth (2-4-3, 1-4-2 WCHA) and Michigan Tech (5-3-1,
2-2-1 WCHA) will meet again Saturday night in the series finale at
the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The puck will drop at 7:07
p.m.
Notes: Tonight's scoreless tie was Tech's first 0-0 tie since Nov.
14, 2003, when the Huskies played to a 0-0 stalemate at Minnesota
State ... The only other scoreless contest MTU has been a part of
at home came against North Dakota on March 8, 1968, at the old Dee
Stadium ... The game marked Tech's first shutout in back-to-back
home series since 1982-83.
