Michigan Tech Registers First Win Over the Oilers Since
2000
HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Michigan Tech extended its winning streak to
three matches and defeated 23rd-ranked Findlay by a score of 3-1
(30-28, 30-28, 22-30, 30-24) in Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference volleyball action Saturday afternoon at the SDC
Gym. The win gave the Huskies a home sweep for the weekend, as they
edged Ashland, 3-1, Friday night.
"It was just a phenomenal match and a phenomenal weekend overall,"
said head coach Krista Mikesch. "We told our players that we needed
to grow up this weekend and they stepped up to the challenge and
did exactly that. I am so proud of the consistent effort we had
from everyone against great competition."
"We felt comfortable with our approach to today's match because we
forced Findlay to change its style of play and that seemed to play
into our advantage. A win is a win, but beating Findlay for the
first time in six years means a lot to me and this program."
Tech never trailed in the opening game, but its lead was never more
than four points. The Huskies held a 29-26 advantage late in the
stanza and the Oilers pushed the score to 29-28, but senior Amanda
Neuhalfen (Arlington, Neb.) converted a set from freshman Alison
Greene (Andover, Minn./Totino Grace) on the right side to secure
the 30-28 triumph.
Findlay turned the table on Tech in game two, as the Oilers led for
much of the session. In an amazing turn of events, however, the
Huskies mounted a comeback that proved to be the turning point in
the match. Trailing 28-22, Tech called on Alison Greene and
sophomore Christa Jung (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids) to provide some
heroics. Greene fired two services aces and provided assists on the
game's final two kills, which were compiled by Jung. Sophomore Jen
Jung (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids) also recorded an assist during
the comeback.
The visitors responded with an eight-point win in the third game of
the contest.
Much like game two, the Huskies mounted a strong rally late in the
fourth stanza. With the score tied at 22, the home team closed the
match with an 8-2 run that put an end to any hopes of a comeback
for the Oilers.
Neuhalfen finished with 13 kills off a .344 hitting percentage,
along with three digs and two block assists. Sophomore Veronica
Armstrong (Battle Creek, Mich./Central) tallied 13 kills, eight
digs, two service aces and one block assist.
Kali Jeter (Middleton, Wis.) was named the Superior Player of the
Match after chipping in a double-double. The junior notched 16
digs, 11 kills, four block assists and one assist.
Christa Jung had eight kills and six block assists. Sister Jen Jung
also secured eight kills, along with a team-best .667 hitting
percentage and six block assists.
Senior Amanda Mackenthun (Waconia, Minn./Mayer Lutheran) doled out
28 assists, while Greene closed the day with 23 helpers, six digs
and a match-best four services.
Sophomore Kelsey Skoog (Long Lake, Minn./Orono) added a team-high
18 digs at her libero post.
UF's Erin Puthoff led all players with 19 kills, while Kelly Byrnes
handed out match-best 52 assists for the Oilers.
For the match, the Huskies held a 12-2 edge in blocks.
Michigan Tech will look for its fourth consecutive win on Tuesday
(Oct. 10) when it hosts arch-rival Northern Michigan at the SDC
Gym. The contest will get underway at 7 p.m.
Notes: Today's win was the first for Tech against Findlay since
Oct. 6, 2000, when the Huskies defeated the Oilers, 3-0, in
Houghton.
