FERRIS STATE UPENDS TECH, 3-0, IN GLIAC QUARTERFINAL

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- Ferris State received 10 or more kills from three different players to pace the Bulldogs to a 3-0 (30-24, 31-29, 30-22) win over the Michigan Tech volleyball team in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal match Tuesday night at Ewigleben Arena. FSU improved to 21-7 overall, while MTU fell to 15-14.

"We had chances to win a few games, but we let them put together long stretches of points, and that really hurt us," said eighth-year head coach Krista Mikesch. "At this point in the year we have to take care of teams when we have the chance, and we couldn't do that tonight. We are a young team, but we can't play young anymore if we want to get to the next level."

"Now we play the waiting game. No one knows for sure if we will be in the NCAA Tournament until selection day, but I do think we are still in a fairly good position within our region. In the meantime, we have a lot of work to do."

The Bulldogs led for much of the first game, but Tech mounted a 12-7 run to close the stanza.

FSU jumped out to a 17-11 lead in game two, but the Huskies responded by inching back into the game a point at a time. MTU was able to tie the score at, 28-28, and, 29-29, but the Bulldogs captured the final two points to win 31-29.

Ferris State never trailed in the final frame and went on to win by an eight-point margin.

Sophomore Vernonica Armstrong (Battle Creek, Mich./Central) led Tech's offensive ledger with nine kills, while also picking up 12 digs, two assists, one service ace and one block assist. Sophomore Jen Jung (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids) tallied seven kills and two block assists. Junior Kali Jeter (Middleton, Wis.) notched eight digs, five kills and one block assist. Senior Amanda Neuhalfen (Arlington, Neb.) contributed four kills and two block assists.

Sophomore Kelsey Skoog (Long Lake, Minn./Orono) continued to show her versatility, as the libero/outside hitter provided a match-best 17 digs, in addition to five kills and one service ace.

MTU's setting corp of freshman Alison Greene (Andover, Minn./Totino Grace) and senior Amanda Mackenthun (Waconia, Minn./Mayer Lutheran) finished with 15 and 13 assists, respectively.

For FSU, Danielle Baucher led the way with 19 kills, 14 digs and two block assists. Karla White (13 kills) and Lindsay Tye (10 kills) also provided reputable offensive numbers for the Bulldogs. Candice Marut handed out a match-high 43 assists.

Ferris State amassed a .313 hitting percentage in the match, compared to a .145 mark for Michigan Tech.

Despite the loss, the Huskies still have a chance to earn a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament field, which will be announced Sunday, Nov. 5, at 10 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on NCAAsports.com
