Williamson Bats Down Two-Point Try to Preserve Tech's Fifth
Straight Win
ERIE, Pa. -- Michigan Tech knocked down a two-point conversion
pass attempt with 10 seconds left to preserve a 14-13 victory at
Gannon this afternoon in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference football action. The Huskies had a 14-0 lead with seven
minutes left in the game before a lightning delay helped the Golden
Knights change the momentum.
Gannon scored with 6:28 left in the fourth quarter on a three-yard
run by Jon Richardson. Tech tried to run out the clock, but was
forced to punt with 1:56 to play. GU then went 64 yards and scored
on a Vinnie DeLuca 33-yard quarterback scramble with 10 seconds
left. Brendan McNicholas missed the potential, game-tying extra
point, but the Huskies were offsides. That put the ball inside the
two-yard line and Gannon coach Bill Elias elected to go for the
win. DeLuca dropped back to pass and had a man in the endzone, but
his pass was deflected incomplete by Demontrail Williamson.
Tech recovered the on-side kick to claim their fifth straight
victory of the year and move to 5-4.
The game remained scoreless for the first 24 minutes despite the
Huskies having two red zone opportunities. Erik Lehmann intercepted
a Matt Butler pass on the fourth play of the game and returned it
14 yards to the Gannon 18. Tech had a first and goal from the five
yard line, but couldn't punch it into the endzone. Alex Tiseo
missed a 23-yard field goal as the ball hit the right upright.
Later in the quarter, Billy Koenig carried the ball on
fourth-and-one at the Gannon 16. He was stopped inches short of the
first down and the Golden Knights took over on downs.
The game's first points came with 5:50 remaining in the second
quarter. Tech converted a fourth-and-nine play with a Steve Short
pass to Keith White to get the ball to the 21-yard line. The next
play, Short and White hooked up again as Short lofted the ball to
the front left corner of the endzone, and White made a leaping
grab. The score remained, 7-0, at halftime.
The Huskies took the opening drive of the second half 80 yards for
a touchdown. Marana scored on a two-yard run up the middle after
tallying 36 total rushing yards during the drive. Tiseo's kick made
the score, 14-0, with 9:46 left in the third quarter.
Neither team was able to move the ball with success until DeLuca
took over for Butler at quarterback with 9:20 to play. He moved the
ball to the Tech 33-yard line before lightning struck in the area
and the teams were sent to the locker room. The Huskies led, 14-0,
with exactly 7:00 left in the game during the weather delay.
The game was resumed following a 30-minute wait, and DeLuca wasted
no time in getting the ball in the endzone.
Marana finished with 192 yards on 45 carries. The Huskies amassed
343 yards of total offense and held the Knights to 191 yards. Short
completed 10-of-16 passes for 138 yards.
Tech held a 37:07-22:53 advantage in time of possession.
Cheyne Nelson had a team-high eight tackles including two tackles
for loss and a sack. Lehmann had four tackles to go with his second
career interception.
Linebacker Dan Tomko made 17 tackles to lead the defensive effort
for Gannon.
Michigan Tech (5-4, 5-4 GLIAC) will have next week off before
traveling to play its season finale at Findlay on Nov. 11.
Notes: Marana needs 180 yards in his final game of the season to
break the school rushing record of 4,788 yards by Jim VanWagner . .
. Junior receiver Kirk Williams had his streak of 14 games with a
catch come to an end after he was injured in the second quarter and
did not return . . . Tech held its fifth straight team under 14
points and 100 yards rushing.
