HOUGHTON, Mich. -- After falling behind, 2-1, the 18th-ranked
Michigan Tech hockey team rallied to score four of the next five
goals, to capture a 5-3 win and series sweep of Alaska Anchorage in
front of 2,479 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena Saturday
night. The win catapulted the Huskies (5-1-0, 2-0-0 WCHA) into a
tie for third in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association
standings.
The Huskies scored the only goal of the opening period, as Jordan
Foote (Edmonton, Alta.) banged in his own rebound to secure the
first goal of his junior campaign at the 4:03 mark. Junior Jake
Wilkens (Eagle River, Alaska) started the play by sending the puck
into the corner from the point, where junior Jimmy Kerr (Leduc,
Alta.) then gained possession. Kerr found Foote behind the net to
UAA netminder Nathan Lawson's left and Foote used hard work to poke
the past the goaltender on a second effort. Kerr and Wilkens each
picked up their third assist of the year on the goal.
Alaska Anchorage (2-2-2, 0-2-0 WCHA) responded with a pair of
markers in the first 8:00 of the second frame, as Mark Smith
tallied his second goal of the year on the power play at 4:03 and
Jay Beagle notched his fourth tally of the season playing 5-on-5 at
7:59.
Junior Tyler Shelast (Kelowna, B.C.) tied the game at 2-2 for the
Huskies at the 15:03 mark of the middle period when he buried a
bouncing puck in front of the net. Tech capitalized on a delayed
penalty call, which gave the home team an opportunity to utilize an
extra skater. Sophomore Geoff Kinrade (Nelson, B.C.) directed a
shot towards the net from the top of the left point that
immediately deflected off teammate Phil Axtell (New Windsor, Md.),
and several Seawolves into the slot. Shelast proved to be in the
right spot, at the right time, as he slipped the puck through the
legs of Lawson to notch his first of two goals on the night.
Axtell's helper was his third of the season, while Kinrade wracked
up his second assist of 2006-07.
Michigan Tech took its first lead of the evening at 10:15 of the
third stanza, as a result of Wilken's first career goal. Wilkens
caught Lawson off guard with a perfectly-placed blast that was
taken near the boards along the right point. Shelast assisted on
the marker, moving his assist total to four on the season.
Shelast struck again at the 17:00 mark of the period, in what ended
up being the game-winning goal. After freshman Alex Gagne (Rock
Forest, Que.) won the faceoff, linemate Malcolm Gwilliam (Kamloops,
B.C.) whistled a shot on net that once again found Shelast's stick.
With the puck bouncing near the goal line, Shelast whacked at the
puck enough to send it into the back of the net past Lawson.
Gwilliam's helper was the second of his sophomore year. The assist
for Gagne moved his season point mark to 2-5--7, which allowed him
to move into a tie for first on Tech's scoring chart with Shelast
(3-4--7).
The visitors made the score 4-3 with an extra-attacker goal with
just :50 remaining, as Chad Anderson compiled his second goal of
the year for UAA.
Michigan Tech got the goal right back, however, as Kerr tapped in
an empty-netter with 28 ticks left on the clock to put an end to
any further comebacks by the Seawolves. Senior Tyler Skworchinski
(Marathon, Ont.) added his second assist of the year on the goal,
while fellow senior Lars Helminen (Brighton, Mich.) was credited
with his third helper of the season.
Sophomore Rob Nolan (Sherwood Park, Alta.) improved his season
record to 2-1-0 after making 23 saves. Lawson stopped 19 shots and
saw his record drop to 2-2-1 in 2006-07.
UAA put together a slight 26-24 shot advantage in the contest.
The Seawolves went 1-for-4 on the power play and the Huskies were
held scoreless on four chances with a man advantage.
Michigan Tech heads to the Rocky Mountains next Friday (Nov. 3) and
Saturday (Nov. 4) for a two-game series at Colorado College. Friday
night's game is scheduled at 9:37 p.m., with Saturday's tilt set to
begin at 9:07 p.m. Both games will be played on the Olympic ice
sheet at Colorado Springs World Arena.
