HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The 18th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team
received points from 12 different players, including a hat trick
from junior Peter Rouleau (Hancock, Mich.), en route to recording
an unprecedented 9-0 victory over #19 Alaska Anchorage in front of
2,357 fans at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena Friday night.
Sophomore netminder Michael-Lee Teslak (Fernie, B.C.), who compiled
his first career shutout in the contest, improved to 3-0-0 on the
season after making 22 saves for Tech.
After a fairly defensive-minded start to the opening period, the
Huskies rattled off four goals in less than six minutes late in the
stanza.
Rouleau lit up the scoreboard first at the 14:27 mark while his
squad was on the penalty kill. The speedy center stole the puck
from a Seawolf defender near center ice and from there Rouleau was
all alone. He eventually beat UAA goaltender Nathan Lawson with a
quick wrist shot from the bottom of the left circle. The shorty was
Rouleau's first as a Husky and the first of the year for Tech.
Rouleau struck again at 16:12, this time on the power play. Senior
Lars Helminen (Brighton, Mich.) rifled a shot from the point that
bounced off Lawson right to the goal scorer. Rouleau lifted the
puck top shelf past Lawson to give the home team a 2-0 lead.
Helminen's helper was the first of two on the night for the
blueliner.
Less than :15 later, freshman Alex Gagne (Rock Forest, Que.) lit
the lamp for the first time as a collegian. The goal came as a
result of Gagne's ability to take advantage of a puck handling
miscue by Lawson. Lawson inadvertently flipped the puck right back
to the Huskies inside his own zone, and with the help of junior
Tyler Shelast (Kelowna, B.C.), Gagne buried his chance. Shelast's
helper was one of three on the evening for the winger.
Rookie Phil Axtell (New Windsor, Md.) capped Tech's four-goal
outburst with a crafty one-timer goal off assists from Gagne and
Shelast in the waning seconds of the first period. Axtell's marker
was his second of the season.
Lawson, who stopped 10 shots in 20:00 of action, was pulled in
favor of freshman Jon Olthuis before the start of the middle
session.
MTU added two goals in the second stanza, one at 7:28, the other at
18:08.
Sophomore Ryan Angelow (Mississauga, Ont.) joined in the scoring
rush, with his first tally of 2006-07 when he beat Olthuis with a
spot-on shot from the left circle. Angelow's goal was set up by
Helminen, who improved his season point total to 1-2--3 with the
assist.
Rouleau provided the conclusion to an already strong offensive
performance with his third lamplighter of the contest with
assistance from linemate Justin St. Louis (Calgary, Alta.). Rouleau
tapped in a rebound while Olthuis was spread out in all directions
on the ice. St. Louis ignited the opportunity by taking the initial
shot, which squirted through for an easy tap in by Rouleau. St.
Louis' assist was the first of his sophomore campaign.
The Huskies' pressure continued in the third period, as junior
Jimmy Kerr (Leduc, Alta.), Gagne and Derek Kitti (Laurium, Mich.)
each found the back of the net.
Kerr filed MTU's second power-play marker of the night just 1:28
into the stanza. Junior Jake Wilkens (Eagle River, Alaska) picked
up his second assist of the year, while senior Tyler Skworchinski
(Marathon, Ont.) was credited with his first helper of the season
on the goal.
Gagne made it 8-0 with his second goal of the game at the 10:14
mark, with assists coming from Shelast and sophomore Malcolm
Gwilliam (Kamloops, B.C.).
Kitti notched his second career goal, and his first of the year, to
close out the scoring exhibition at 11:25 of the period.
MTU compiled a final shot advantage of 30-22 over UAA.
Tech went 2-for-6 on the power play and held the Seawolves
scoreless on five chances with a man advantage.
Olthuis finished with 11 saves in final two periods of the
game.
Michigan Tech is now 4-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in Western Collegiate
Hockey Association competition, while Alaska Anchorage's records
stands at 2-1-2 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play.
