MARQUETTE, Mich. -- Matt Siddall's power-play goal just :45 into
the contest proved to be the game-winning goal, as Northern
Michigan recorded a 1-0 victory and series split against the
Michigan Tech hockey team Saturday night at the Berry Events
Center. The Huskies are now 1-1, while the Wildcats improved to
1-2-1.
The Wildcats jumped out to the early 1-0 lead, but the Huskies
carried a 5-3 shot advantage at the end of one period.
In a game that saw 32 penalties called, neither teams was able to
light the lamp for the remainder of the evening.
Tech had two 5-on-3 opportunities -- one in the first period and
one in the second stanza -- but NMU netminder Bill Zaniboni stopped
all of MTU's shots en route to earning his first shutout of the
season.
With just over 1:00 remaining in regulation, head coach Jamie
Russell called a timeout to mount one last attack. Michigan Tech
was able to win numerous faceoffs, but was unable to solve
Zaniboni, which allowed the home team to pull out a hard-fought
victory.
The final shot tally revealed a 22-14 advantage for the
Huskies.
Northern Michigan went 1-for-10 on the power play, while Tech was
scoreless on 11 power-play chances.
MTU sophomore goaltender Rob Nolan (Sherwood Park, Alberta) made 13
saves for the Huskies and Zaniboni finished with 22 saves for the
Wildcats.
Michigan Tech travels to Burlington, Vt., for a two-game set
against the Vermont Catamounts next Friday (Oct. 20) and Saturday
(Oct. 21). Both games are set to start at 7:05 p.m.
Note: The four combined goals scored by MTU and NMU in this
weekend's series marked the lowest two-game goal total registered
by the Huskies and the Wildcats since the series began in the
1976-77 season.
