DULUTH, Minn. -- Eight different players notched a point,
including a two-point effort from Justin St. Louis, as the Michigan
Tech (5-17-1, 4-10-1 WCHA) hockey team edged Minnesota Duluth
(8-11, 4, 5-7-3) by a 4-2 score in front of an announced crowd of
4,114 at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center Friday
night. Michael-Lee Teslak made 26 saves and recorded his fifth win
of the season between the pipes for MTU.
The Huskies opened the game's scoring at the 12:49 mark when Jimmy
Kerr lit the lamp for the second time of the year off assists from
Justin St. Louis and John Schwarz. With the puck near center ice,
St. Louis muscled the puck towards Kerr by the UMD blue line. From
there, Kerr made a quick move around a defender in the slot and
then beat Bulldog netminder Isaac Reichmuth low on the glove side.
The helper for St. Louis was his sixth of the year. Schwarz's
assist was the first of his rookie year and his first point as a
Husky.
Tech struck again late in the first stanza, as Nick Anderson
blasted home a one-timer on the power play at 18:40. Brandon
Schwartz cycled the puck from the point over to Anderson at the top
of the left circle and Anderson fired the puck by Reichmuth high on
the stick side. Anderson's tally was his fifth of the season and
was his fourth power-play marker of the year. Schwartz picked up
the ninth assist of his senior campaign, while Lars Helminen
extended his point streak to three games with his 12th assist of
2005-06.
Minnesota Duluth's Nick Kemp converted on a 3-on-2 rush at 16:31 of
the second frame to cut the score to 2-1.
MTU outshot UMD by a 19-8 clip in the second period.
Chris Conner and Taggart Desmet worked together to give the
visitors what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 11:14 mark
of the final period. The linemates set up a give-and-go near the
left circle and after receiving a timely pass from Desmet, Conner
fired a shot high on the short side past Reichmuth. Conner's tally
was his team-leading 13th goal of the year and 23rd point. Desmet
earned his seventh assist of the season and 12th point.
After several UMD scoring chances were stifled by MTU, the home
team pulled Reichmuth to gain the extra skater with less than 1:00
left in regulation. The Huskies quickly gained control of the puck,
however, and St. Louis launched a shot near the left boards in the
neutral zone into the top half of the Bulldogs' vacant net to give
his team a 4-1 lead. St. Louis's tally pushed his season point
total to 1-6--7, tops among Tech rookies.
Matt Greer added a late goal for the Bulldogs at 19:28, but
Michigan Tech held Minnesota Duluth scoreless for the remaining :32
to secure the victory.
MTU held a 36-28 shot advantage in the game.
Reichmuth dropped to 5-7-4 after making 32 saves for UMD.
The Huskies went 1-for-7 on the power play, compared to an 0-for-4
clip for the Bulldogs.
Michigan Tech will look for the series-sweep Saturday night at the
DECC. Opening faceoff is slated for 8:07 p.m. EST.
