MADISON, Wis. -- Captain Brandon Schwartz tallied three points,
including an empty-net goal with :28 left in the third period to
help seal a 4-2 win for the Michigan Tech (3-13-1, 2-8-1 WCHA)
hockey team over No. 1 ranked Wisconsin (13-2-2, 10-1-2 WCHA) in
front of an announced crowd of 12,718 at Kohl Center Friday night.
Chris Conner notched a goal and an assist, while netminder
Michael-Lee Teslak made 31 saves in the win.
For the third time this season, the Huskies scored the first goal
of the game, a shorthanded marker at the 2:00 mark of the first
period. Conner lit the lamp for the 10th time in his senior
campaign with a breakaway goal off an assist from defenseman Jake
Wilkens. After receiving a tape-to-tape pass from Wilkens near the
Wisconsin blueline, Conner skated in all alone and beat Badger
goaltender Brian Elliott with a nifty backhanded shot five-hole.
Wilkens' helper was the first of his two-year career at Tech.
UW 's Tom Gilbert tied the game at 1-1 at the 3:45 mark of the
second period.
Schwartz gave the Huskies a 2-1 advantage at 15:26 of the middle
frame with Tech's second shorty of the contest. With the puck on
the stick of a Badger defenseman behind the net, Conner stole the
puck and found Schwartz open in the front of the net. Schwartz
quickly released a shot that squirted through the legs of Elliott.
Conner's helper was his seventh of the year and 17th point of the
season.
MTU outshot Wisconsin 12-7 in the second frame.
The Huskies gained a two-goal cushion with a power-play marker at
the 3:43 mark of the final stanza, as Nick Anderson buried a
rebound off a Lars Helminen shot from the point. Anderson's tally
was his fourth of the season and third with a man advantage.
Helminen notched his team-best ninth assist of the year, while
Schwartz was credited with his seventh helper of the season on the
play.
Ross Carlson quickly answered for the Badgers with an unassisted
goal at 7:52 of the period to make the score 3-2.
UW was forced to pull Elliott with :55 remaining in order to muster
one final attempt at a late-game comeback. The Huskies weathered
the storm, however, and Schwartz culminated a great personal
performance with an empty-net goal at the 19:32 mark. The winger's
tally was his third point of the evening. Mike Batovanja and Jimmy
Kerr each earned an assist on the empty-netter.
Wisconsin finished with a slight 33-27 shot advantage, but Michigan
Tech scored the game's lone power-play goal.
Elliott compiled 23 saves in the loss for the Badgers.
The Huskies will look to record their first sweep of the season
tomorrow night in the series-finale at the Kohl Center. The opening
faceoff is scheduled for 9:07 p.m., one hour later, because a
