#6 MICHIGAN TOPS HUSKIES 5-3 IN GLI THIRD PLACE GAME

DETROIT, Mich. -- Brandon Schwartz tallied a goal and an assist and Chris Conner recorded two assists, but three goals in the final period gave #6 Michigan (12-6-1, 7-3-1 CCHA) a 5-3 win over the Michigan Tech (4-17-1, 3-10-1 WCHA) hockey team in the third place game of the 41st annual Great Lakes Invitational Friday night at Joe Louis Arena.

The Huskies jumped on the board just 4:11 into the game, as Tyler Shelast netted his third goal of the GLI, and his second power-play marker of the tournament. Shelast took a pass from Batovanja at the bottom of the left circle and beat UM netminder Billy Sauer with a quick shot. Batovanja's assist was his fifth of the year. Geoff Kinrade also picked up his fifth helper of the season on the goal.

Behind T.J. Hensick's power-play goal, Michigan knotted the score at 1-1 at the 11:36 mark of the first period.

Brandon Schwartz and Chris Conner teamed up to put the Huskies ahead 2-1 with a shorthanded goal at 8:25 of the middle frame. Conner rifled a shot from the slot off the right pipe, where Schwartz tapped the rebound past Sauer on the glove side. Schwartz netted his seventh goal of the year, while Conner secured his team-leading ninth assist of the 2005-06 campaign.

MTU lit the lamp again just over 2:00 later when Lars Helminen blasted home a one-timer from the point on the power play to give the home team a 3-1 cushion. Conner compiled his second helper of the game on the play and his 10th of the season. Schwartz was credited with the second assist on the goal, his eighth of the year.

Matt Hunwick cut the score to 3-2 for Michigan with a power-play marker at 12:37 of the second stanza.

The Wolverines put up two 5-on-5 tallies in the final period, as Jason Bailey scored the game-tying marker at 5:07, while Chad Kolarik provided the gamewinner at the 16:56 mark. Tim Miller tacked on an empty-net goal with :32 left in regulation.

Goaltender Rob Nolan stopped 32 shots for the Huskies, while Billy Sauer made 35 saves for UM.

Tech outshot the Wolverines 38-37 in the game.

Both teams scored twice with a man advantage.

The Huskies are off next weekend and will resume Western Collegiate Hockey Association competition Jan. 13-14 when they travel to the Twin Ports to take on Minnesota Duluth at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center.
