DETROIT, Mich. -- Tyler Shelast scored a pair of goals and
netminder Michael-Lee Teslak made a career-high 57 saves, but an
overtime goal from Colton Fretter gave Michigan State (8-7-5, 4-5-4
CCHA) a 3-2 win over Michigan Tech (4-16-1, 3-10-1 WCHA) in the
opening game of the 41st annual Great Lakes Invitational at Joe
Louis Arena Thursday night.
Teslak stopped 23-of-24 shots in the first period and MSU's lone
goal came at the 18:53 mark when Tim Crowder netted his seventh
marker of the season.
Aided by a 5:00 checking from behind major penalty, the Huskies
evened the score at 1-1 at 14:50 of the second stanza. Tyler
Shelast tallied his team-best fourth power-play marker of the year
off assists from Lars Helminen and Ryan Angelow. Helminen rifled a
hard wrister from the right point and Shelast tipped the puck high
above Spartan goaltender Dominic Vicari on the stick side.
Helminen's helper was his team-leading 11th of the season, while
Angelow earned the second assist of his freshman campaign.
Tech responded with the go-ahead goal at the 17:09 mark of the
middle frame. Shelast lit the lamp for the second time of the
night, this time with an unassisted marker. The winger corralled a
rolling puck in the left circle and fired a quick shot past Vicari
on the stick side.
Justin Abdelkader notched the game-tying score for the Spartans at
10:04 of the third period.
Neither team scored again in the final stanza, forcing
overtime.
Fretter's ot goal at 13:59 helped MSU advance to Friday's GLI
championship game against the winner of the Colorado
College/Michigan game.
Vicari finished with 34 saves for the Spartans.
MSU outshot MTU 60-36 in the game.
The Huskies were 1-4 on the power play, compared to an 0-6 clip for
the Spartans.
Tech will play in the third-place game tomorrow afternoon at 4:36
p.m.
Notes: Shelast's two-goal performance was his first multi-goal game
of the season and the third of his career ... Teslak's 57-save
effort was a GLI record, as he bested the old mark of 46 saves set
by Colgate's Geoff McMullen, who posted the old high mark back on
Dec. 29, 1970 ... It was also the highest save total for an MTU
goalie since Cam Ellsworth made 52 saves in a 4-2 loss to St. Cloud
State on Feb. 1, 2003.
