The most successful football coach in Michigan Tech history, Ted
Kearly guided the Huskies from 1969-72 and in those four seasons
compiled a remarkable 29-7-0 (.806) record.
During his tenure, the Huskies won three Northern
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles, including a perfect
6-0-0 conference season in 1972.
Kearly was persuaded to take over as athletic director for the
Huskies following the '72 football season and spent 17 successful
years in the position.
Among his many accomplishments while leading the Michigan Tech
athletic program, Kearly guided the start of women's athletics into
the Tech program, founded the Michigan Tech Sports Hall of Fame,
and saved the school's football program when the budget was cut 76
percent in 1980.
He is a member of the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame and has been
honored with Distinguished Service Awards from both the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the Western Collegiate
Hockey Association.
