A long time friend to the Michigan Tech hockey team and its
players, the late Kirl Spiroff is one of the "old-time' Huskies
sports boosters that were so very vital in helping the MTU athletic
program grow to what it is today.
Spiroff graudated from Michigan Tech with an undergraduate
degree in 1923 and then received his masters' degree in geology in
1933. He proceeded to teach at Michigan Tech from 1934 until he
retired in 1970.
Along with his teaching, Spiroff also served as curator for the
A. E. Seaman Museum on two different occasions, and for seven years
was the superintendent at Isle Royal Copper Co., in Houghton
County.
Spirof was well known for his support of the Michigan Tech
hockey program, counseling players, providing scholarship money,
and recruiting players for coaches Amo Bessone and Al Renfrew. The
MTU training room is named in his honor today as a result of his
actions.
