Donald P. Sherman

Donald P. Sherman came to Michigan Tech in 1929 as its
basketball coach and assistant athletic director. He became
athletic director at Tech in 1936 and was made a full professor of
economics in 1943. Under his direction, three varsity sports were
added to the Huskies' athletic program- boxing, tennis, and skiing.
Sherman also initiated and developed Michigan Tech's intramural
program.
Born in Battle Creek, Michigan, he was an outstanding high
school and college athlete and attended Wabash College in
Crawfordsville, Indiana, during the days when that tiny school
competed against Nortre Dame, Indiana, and Purdue on the gridiron.
Sherman was named to the All-Indiana football team and served as
team captain during his senior year.
Besides his duties on campus, Sherman was very active in civic
affairs. A member of the Houghton village council for serveral
years, he served as president pro tem of the council and was
chairman of the street committee. Sherman was the first director of
Dee Stadium after the University took control of the facility and
was deeply involved in Winter Carnival festivites each year.
