HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech Nordic ski teams are competing this weekend at the Gitchi Gami Games at the Birkie Trailhead and Mt. Telemark Village in the town of Cable, Wisconsin. The Huskies are competing in Saturday's classic sprint, Sunday's skate, and Tuesday's classic race.
The American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation hosts the event and it will encompass the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Super Tour presented by the National Nordic Foundation, and the Salomon Central Cross-Country Skiing (CXC) Youth Cup and Adaptive Cup. The races are 1.3-kilometer Super Tour freestyle sprints on Dec. 12, classic sprints on Dec. 14, freestyle individual-start races on Dec. 15, and Super Tour classic mass-start races on Dec. 17.
The Gitchi Gami Games are part of the Junior Cup and Youth Cup event series. The Junior National Qualifier series is governed by Central Cross Country Skiing and encourages young athletes from U8 to U23 age divisions to enjoy cross country skiing and develop their skills, whether they are new to the sport, high school skiers, aspiring junior skiers who hope to compete at the top national and international levels, or are somewhere in between.
The events mix Olympic-style competition with elements of learning and fun for all levels—from beginner racers to those with International experience.
