Cuenot Takes Podium in the Freestyle, Huskies Place Second in CCSA Championship

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech Nordic skiing teams put on another impressive performance during the freestyle races today. The Huskies earned second place overall, and Gaspard Cuenot cleared a spot on the podium in the 20K.

"It was a good competition. Conditions were fantastic today. I thought our men and women competed real well today," said Tech head coach Joe Haggenmiller.

Gaspard Cuenot battled for 2nd place, finishing with a time of 55:17.2. Cuenot was followed by teammate Tom Bye seconds after with a time of 55:24.7 for 4th place. Tomi Mikkonen took 10th place for the Huskies, hitting the line at 58:01.9.  Other finishers for the Tech men were David Jaszczak (12th, 58:25.3), Dan Wood (16th, 59:49.1), Mark Wenzel (25th, 1:04:15.6), and Seth Mares (1:07:04.4).

"It was definitely fun to see the Huskies with the black and gold up at the front of the race. It was a very elite pack that was up there with Gaspard," said coach Haggenmiller. "It would have been nice to go one and two with Tom and Gaspard, but that's ski racing. At times we were one and two in the race but coming up that last 400 meters, a lot of stuff gets shaken out."

Making the top 10 for the 15K freestyle was Carolyn Lucca finishing in 8th place again today, completing the course with a time of 49:08.9. Alongside her was Sonja Hedblom, cracking the line seconds after in 9th place with a time of 49:11.1. The two were joined by teammates Lisa Koenig in 11th place with a time of 18:42.7, Anna Kubek (17th, 19:33). Sarah Wade (20:19.6), Erin Lipp (20:38.5), and Ruth Oppliger (27th, 20:41.8).

"They were animating that second pack quite a bit (Lucca and Hedblom). I think percentage back they were a little closer today than they were yesterday to the race winners, so that is good to see," added Haggenmiller. "Lisa Koenig had a pretty good day for herself too,  that's exciting to see."

Overall, the Nordic teams walked away from the CCSA Championship with 2nd place. Major point contributors for the Huskies were the men's top three finishers Tom Bye, Gaspard Cuenot, and Tomi Mikkonen. Carolyn Lucca, Sonja Hedblom and Lisa Koenig led the women.

Michigan Tech would like to thank the organizing committee for all of their hard work and doing an exceptional job throughout this weekend's home events.

The Huskies will be back in action in Rhinelander, Wis. next weekend for the Rhinelander Qualifier on Saturday, Feb. 11.
