Huskies Take 7-2 Win over LSSU in Season Opener

Huskies Take 7-2 Win over LSSU in Season Opener

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's tennis team claimed a 7-2 non-conference win over Lake Superior State University Friday in the 2017-18 season opener. The Huskies took five of six singles competitions and won twice in the doubles portion of the match.

"We started out a little sloppy (first match of the year outside) in doubles, but our positioning and shot selection were good so we were able to pull out two of the three matches," Head Coach Kevin Kalinec said. "We picked things up and played a little better in singles, especially in the number two through spots in our lineup. Overall, it was a good start and nice to get the first win of the season."

The top Michigan Tech (1-0) pairing of Sandra Cvetanovic and Paola Quintana kicked off the match with an 8-4 win in doubles against Tara Harvey and Macarena Bielsa of Lake Superior State (0-1). The Lakers earned a win in the number two doubles spot 8-3, but Allenca Rolim and Natalia Parra Alvarez teamed up in the number three spot to generate a crucial third point. They were able to hold off Kirsten Malpass and Allison Grandfield 8-6 with some strong shots in the later portion of the set.

Alexiann Drouin momentarily tied the match at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-2 win in the top singles spot for the Lakers. However, the Huskies would bounce right back and sweep the final five points. Ivona Gorgioski, Cvetanovic, Quinde, Parra Alvarez, and Anabella Neri all earned wins.

Gorgioski dominated her match with a 6-2, 6-1 result in the second spot in the lineup. Cvetanovic won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3, Quinde took her match 6-3, 6-3 at No.4, Parra Alvarez had a commanding 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5, and Neri picked up the lone sweep with 6-0, 6-0 scores in the sixth spot.

The Huskies will be back on the court Sunday when they travel to Lawrence Tech (Mich.) for another non-conference contest. The first serve is slated for 9 a.m.
